Each usually has at least 3 criticisms!
You can look in the Gale Literature Database also, but most poem and short stories do not have any or many results.
Open your Research Paper Sources Chart that we started last time. Should be titled (Name of Novel) Research Paper Sources Chart.
We'll be filling in the purple boxes this time.
Search the Thematic Index for the theme pages you used when finding poems. Make a list of short stories to investigate. Cross-referencing themes can help with this if you list is LONG or try synonyms or ideas you hope to connect to your thesis..
Google a summary of the SHORT STORY or find the summary in the PRINT Short Stories for Students volume noted in the index.
If the summary seem to indicate that the story will be a good thematic match, track down the short story and read it.
WAYS TO TRACK DOWN A SHORT STORY
Short Stories for Students Index has stories linked that students have used previously
Google "name of story" + pdf or "name of story" + full text
If the story can't be found online, choose a different story or if you're pretty sure it's the perfect thematic match ask Mrs. Jonson. She can find/order the story but it will take a few days to arrive.
If the short story does share a strong thematic connection, add it to your Research Paper Sources chart. Repeat Step 2 until you have 2 short stories that match thematically with your novel.
Begin your Graphic Organizer for this project to track ideas and research. Make a short list of themes from your novel that you feel like you could write well about. Need ideas? lookup your novel in the Thematic Index.
Using the Thematic Index, make a list of poems that match the themes on your list from Step #1. Poems with their authors
Pro tip = cross-reference long list (Ex: Beauty and Corruption)
Pro tip = Look for synonyms for your theme (Ex: Bravery, Courage, Heroism) or antonyms (cowardice)
Look up your poems online & read them. Make sure to include the author's name. Read the poem to see if it's a good THEME match. If not move, on. Plan to read at least 30 poems to find 3 matches. Once a poem matches thematically, add it to your Graphic Organizer in Step #1
