In case you can't attend Curriculum Night, the information below is some of the important information that will be covered. My website covers most other important information as well. I will also post the presentation after Curriculum Nights so you will see as much as possible
In the past, I used a planner in my classroom religiously. I’m a firm believer in teaching organization and planning. Since last year, we've been using Google Classroom instead of a paper and pencil and planner as it is set up so well to display assignments and due dates. The overall goal here is to teach independence and responsibility. I could email you the homework assignments nightly; or post them on the internet, but then it takes the responsibility out of the students' hands and into yours, plus I've tried that and I get busy with meetings and other interruptions and being human, I forget.
1. However, if you feel your student would benefit from a paper and pencil planner, you can provide them one And, if you wish, I will sign the planners of students DAILY for those whose parents ask me to. This is an excellent option for parents who like to know that their child has copied down the homework correctly. This is for students who need "extra support" (clearly I can't do this for every student in the class) or has issues with homework completion.
2. Parents themselves can also sign the planner either daily or on the week-end to indicate that they have seen what the homework is and/or that their student has completed it. This is a type of covenant between you and your child, not me and you. I recommend all parents ask their student to pull up their assignment page at some point in the afternoon/evening so you can stay on top of helping them be successful.
3. I am open to do whatever communication method works for each individual. We just need to talk to work it out. I'm open to helping with whatever works for any inividual differences. You just need to let me know.
Students have a FRIDAY FOLDER that will go home on Fridays with completed work they can keep at home, notices from school, miscellaneous things like that. If there is something that needs your signature and needs to be returned, it should be obvious. Please EMPTY and return the Friday Folder on Monday; no later than Tuesday please.
They also will have work folders that are kept in the classroom to store "in progress" paper and pencil work. They may take these home if there is anything unfinished (that was due) from that day. It is optional to use this folder, but I encourage it for organization.
