Interior Design 1 and 2
Course Description: Students explore their creativity while integrating knowledge, skills, and practices in housing, interiors, and furnishings. Identification of the elements and principles of design are emphasized. Topics may include furniture arrangement and history, floor plan design and drafting; and careers. Students should enjoy hands-on and project learning. This is an introductory class and is suitable for students wishing to design and decorate for their own use as well as those wanting to pursue a career in the field.
Curriculum Units of Study:
Careers/Understanding Interior Decorator vs. Designer
1. Explain the roles and functions of individuals engaged in housing and interior design careers and summarize education, training, and credentialing requirements for career paths in housing and interior design.
Elements and Principles
2. Evaluates the use of elements and principles of design in housing interiors and analyzes the effects on aesthetics and function.
3. Analyze the psychological impact that the principles and elements of design have on the individual.
Design
4. Analyze product information, including but not limited to floor coverings, wall coverings, textiles, window treatments, furniture, lighting fixtures, kitchen and bath fixtures and equipment.
5. Draft an interior space to scale using architecture symbols and arrange furniture placement with reference to principles of design, traffic flow, activity, and existing architectural features.
6. Demonstrate graphic communication skills.
History
7. Describe features of furnishings that are characteristic of various historical periods.
8. Compare and contrast historical details to current housing and interior design trends.
Design
9. Assess client's community, family, and financial resources needed to achieve housing and interior design goals.
10. Critique design plans to address client's needs, goals and resources.
11. Prepare visual presentations including legends and keys.
12. Utilize a variety of presentation media.
Careers
13. Analyze potential career choices to determine the knowledge, skills, and attitudes associated with each other.
14. Demonstrate leadership and teamwork skills and abilities in school, workplace, and community settings.

Decorating magazines (pottery barn, restoration hardware etc. that you receive in the mail are great)
