Driver Education is available to Jackson County high school students ages 14½ to 18. Students must complete a 30-hour classroom course and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel driving to earn a Driver Education Completion Certificate. A 200-question proficiency test is also available in place of the class, but it may only be taken once.
Classes are offered throughout the year at Smoky Mountain High School and Blue Ridge Early College. A registration fee is required, and fee waivers may be requested through the school principal.
Students must be 15 years old and have completed Driver Education to apply for a NC Limited Learner Permit. Please note, schools are required to notify the NC DMV if a student drops out or is not making adequate academic progress.
