Work‐Based Learning (WBL) combines the traditional classroom setting with a workplace environment that provides students with opportunities to work in a chosen career path while earning credit toward high school graduation. Students earn credit through the number of contact hours spent in the classroom and on the training site. There are two types of WBL experiences: paid and unpaid. Students enrolled in Career Preparation (& Extended Career Preparation) are encouraged to participate in paid experiences.
Classroom teachers collaborate with students to determine the best possible training placements, provide classroom related instruction, and consult with training supervisors regarding student progress. Experienced training supervisors provide instruction on specific job skills and technical requirements and evaluate student performance, which becomes part of the student’s grade for the course. See the WBL manual below for additional details and requirements.

As part of the State’s Accountability System, prior to graduation, all students must be able to demonstrate that they possess a full range of knowledge and skills needed to succeed in entry-level college courses, as well as in a wide range of careers. This is typically measured through the English and Math TSI Assessment 2. The TSIA2 is initially administered during a student’s junior year.
Alternatively, students can exempt the TSI Assessment 2 and demonstrate college and career readiness if they meet any of the following standards:
● SAT: Minimum score of 530 on the math section and 480 on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) section
● ACT: Composite score of 23 or higher with at least a 19 on the English section and 19 on the math section
● Take and receive college credit for an OnRamps class offered through LBJHS or another public high school.
● Earn a Level 1 or Level 2 approved Industry-Based Certification.
Students who have not demonstrated college and career readiness in both English and math by the end of their junior year will be assigned to College Prep English and/or College Prep Math during their senior year. Successful completion of the self-paced class demonstrates college and career readiness for accountability purposes.
