The main purpose of the Spanish program is to enable the student to attain a measurable degree of communicative competency and proficiency in each of the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The material is logically sequenced and programmed to make the acquisitions of the structure of the language as logical as possible. In order to be authentic in the presentation of culture, all areas of the Spanish-speaking world are studied, including all socioeconomic groups. Spanish 1 focuses on the present tense of regular and irregular verbs.

Spanish 2 is designed for the student who has previously had more than just an introduction to the Spanish language and is now able to initiate and hold a conversation creating simple questions and sentences. Students will be provided with a variety of activities in order to further develop their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish. Through such activities, students will learn to use the Spanish language to provide information to, and obtain information from listeners and readers using familiar words, phrases, and sentences. Spanish 2 focuses on the use of irregular verbs in the present, future tenses, and the use of ser and estar. Students will also experience and gain an appreciation of various aspects of the culture of people living in Spanish-speaking countries.

Students who are fluent in a language other than English may request to take an examination to earn credit. The ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) is an assessment of standards-based language learning across the three modes of communication (Interpersonal, Presentational, and Interpretive) as defined by the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning. The AAPPL assesses Interpersonal Listening/Speaking, Presentational Writing, Interpretive Reading, and Interpretive Listening, and ratings are assigned according to the ACTFL Performance Descriptors for Language Learners.
The four components of the test take a total of approximately two hours.
