Weather, clothing & comfort
The weather in southern Italy can be unpredictable, so in your packing, you should prepare forboth cold and warm temperatures, as well as the possibility of rain. We have experienced bothsnow and 80-degree days in Italy -- on the same trip! Layering your clothing is essential. The following is a suggested packing list:
( ) jacket or coat: waterproof, fairly lightweight( ) mini umbrella( ) sweater: medium-weight, cotton or wool, versatile.( ) 2-3 pairs of pants: jeans, khakis, black pants – you may bring shorts but you MUST havelong pants for several visits (including the Vatican, and the Rome concert) where shortsare discouraged.( ) good shoes: very sturdy with a thick sole. Your shoes must be comfortable for walking(low-heeled), and should NOT be brand-new. (Blisters can ruin your day!). Hiking boots,Doc Martens, Birkenstocks, or running shoes are some options. Waterproofshoes/boots have proved advisable.( ) 3-4 short-sleeved shirts: solid colors are best. Avoid logos, motifs, and conspicuousEnglish writing. When visiting churches, sleeveless or strappy tops must be covered witha sweatshirt or jacket.( ) 2-3 long-sleeved shirts: lightweight sweaters, knit tops, solid-colored sweatshirts, button-down shirts( ) warm pajamas and socks/slippers( ) socks and underwear: enough for 12 days. It is possible to have some laundry done at theVilla, but it is expensive (e.g. $5-$6 for one pair of pants).
Among your clothes, we recommend that you include something within the dressy/casual range for the Rome concert.
(While packing, keep in mind that you can wear your bulkiest clothing, heaviest shoes, and jacket on the plane, thus saving room in your luggage.)
