Bilingual Education

Jarrell ISD is proud to offer a bilingual education program to all students in grades Prekindergarten - 5th grade. This program provides English Learners of the same language a classroom environment where they receive their academic instruction in their native language while transitioning to English instruction. Students are taught to speak, listen, read, and write in both Spanish and English across all academic areas.

In the classroom, teachers will deliver instruction in both Spanish and English based on the grade level instructional delivery model and the need of students. Our goal of the program is to provide students with an academically challenging classroom where they transition to English only instruction by the end of 2nd grade and continue with support though the ESL program in the later grades. Bilingual education can still be provided to students in 3rd-5th grades as needed until they can exit with full success in English proficiency.

Bilingual Education Program is offered at Igo Elementary ONLY.

Program Goal

Our goal is to provide students with an academically challenging classroom where they transition to English only instruction by the end of 2nd grade and continue with support through the ESL program in the later grades. Students will utilize their primary language as a resource while acquiring full proficiency in English.

Model of Instruction:

The instructional model for early-exit transitional bilingual education is to provide instruction in literacy and academic content through the students' primary language, along with instruction in English that targets second language development. The level of spoken native language will decrease rapidly to support transitional development to English.

This is the suggested model. Students will be assessed in their language each year to determine mastery and make determinations for assessment languages as well as continued support in the Bilingual program

Who Can Participate?

Students must qualify through an identification process for the Bilingual program. If students meet qualifications through home language survey, language assessment, and committee recommendation, then parents can elect to receive services for their students through the Bilingual program. See the Supporting English Learners in Texas website from TEA for more information.
