Garfield Virtual Academy

Welcome...

The Garfield Virtual Academy is a new online option for James A. Garfield Students for the 2020 / 2021 school year. We are excited to offer two high-end curriculum systems that were hand picked by our JAG teaching staff to support our students in a remote environment. At Garfield, we know that the connections students make with their teachers and classmates throughout the school year is irreplaceable. To ensure our remote students never feel alone, we have on-boarded 15 Virtual Academy Specialists to make those connections with our students on a weekly basis. If you have any questions as we begin, or throughout the year, please don't hesitate to reach out to me at tbartz@jagschools.org during normal school hours. This is something new and might be different than what we are used to but G-Men are built to adapt. I look forward to working together and watching our students succeed in this new and exciting learning environment.

Virtually,

Tom

mandatory spring ode assessments

The Ohio Department of Education requires all students, including those learning online, to take the spring state assessments. We have scheduled dates and times for the administration of these tests. The assessment will take place at school with only our online students. Most tests consist of 2 parts, a morning and an afternoon session (no morning session for 3rd grade tests). Students will need to wear a mask and will be socially distanced for the duration of the test. Students in grades 7 - 12 should bring a charged Chromebook with earbuds or headphones for the assessments. Students in grades 3 - 6 should bring headphones, a Chromebook will be provided on the day of testing. Calculators are permitted on some of the math tests. If a student does not have a calculator, the school will provide them one to use the day of the test.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. How do I find out more about the upcoming school year?

You have come to the right place! This web site will house all of the available information for the Garfield Virtual Academy. If you are looking for information regarding in person learning, please check the JAG Reopening Plan here.

Q2. What if my student does not like this type of education?

We understand change is tough on some students. Students must commit to at least 1 semester of Virtual Academy upon enrollment. If it does not work out, students will have the opportunity to rejoin in-person learning at the start of the second semester.

Q3. Does the Virtual Academy cost money?

No, Garfield Virtual Academy students are still full-time JAG Students so there are no extra 'tuition' costs.

Q4. Will my student have access to a Chromebook?

Yes, all Virtual Academy Students grades K - 12 will have the opportunity to check out a Chromebook from the school at no additional cost.

Q5. Will my student need Internet at home?

Yes, students MUST have reliable, high-speed, Internet at home as this is how the content is delivered. This is true of ALL online schools as well.

Q6. What can I do if I don't have a strong internet connection at home?

Families can check with their cellular provider to purchase hot spots (unlimited data recommended) or can also check them out from the local library.

Q7. Will students have JAG Teachers answering questions, providing feedback and grading?

Yes, each course will have a Virtual Academy Specialist assigned to them. Virtual Academy Specialists will all be JAG Teachers.

Q8. Will there be a Parent Orientation Meeting?

Yes, we will run two separate Parent Orientation Meetings on Thursday, September 3rd. Orientation for grades K - 5 will be from 4:00 - 5:00 pm and orientation for grades 6 - 12 will be held from 5:30 - 6:30 pm. You will receive a link to join the meeting virtually at the email address we have on file for your student in Final Forms.

Q9. When will Chromebook pick up be held?

Chromebook pick up for all Virtual Academy Students will be Friday, September 4th from 11:00 a - 12:00 p and 4:00 p - 5:00 p at the District Office. If you can not make it during those time slots, please email Mr. Bartz at tbartz@jagschools.org to set up an alternate time.

Q10. Who should I contact if my child needs their Google Account password reset?

Please contact Mr. Bartz if your child can not access their Google Account.

Q11. I can log in to Lincoln Learning but now I am receiving a message to enroll in courses. What do I do?

I believe we are seeing this error message because the classes are not set to start until Tuesday. I do not anticipate this being and issue but if we are still seeing this error message on Tuesday I will begin to troubleshoot.

Q12. I am not receiving information via email from the Virtual Academy. What should I do?

I have found that some of the email addresses in our system are out of date. If you haven't already done so, please fill out Parent Contact Information form for each student enrolled. This is the email address I will use for all Virtual Academy communications moving forward.

Q13. I am receiving the following error while trying to log in to Lincoln Learning

lls-prod-oh-pulse.auth.us-east-2.amazoncognito.com refused to connect."

I have seen this come up a few times throughout the week. Seems like there are two ways to get into the system and the link here has been much more stable.

Q14. My Lincoln Learning workbook does not match up with my online activities? What do I do?

According to Lincoln Learning Solutions, the workbook pages correspond solely to the PDFs in the student’s courses. The workbooks are not companions to the course, meaning the pages will not correspond to every page of every lesson- only to specific activity pages in specific lessons.

Lincoln Learning Solutions workbooks do not include a Table of Contents or page numbers, so the best way for a student to determine when the workbook is needed is by reviewing the Materials section under each activity. It will request students go to an Activity or Worksheet page.

Q15. If JAG in person students have a scheduled day off, how does that affect the online learners?

Online students follow the same schedule as our face to face learners. If we have the day off on campus, online learners will not be expected to log hours that day and the weekly requirement would be adjusted accordingly.

Q16. What should I do if I forgot my password?

Chromebook / Google Account -- Contact Mr. Bartz at tbartz@jagschools.org for a temporary password

Edgenuity - Contact Mr. Bartz at tbartz@jagschools.org for a reset message to be sent from Edgenuity to your jagschools.org account

Lincoln Learning - Use the following link and click Forgot Password for reset password to be sent to your parents email address on file -- https://pulse.llsapps.org/
