Welcome to Policy! We're a tight-knit group where both casual and competitive debaters can find their interests in research, discourse, and everything in-between!
Policy Debate is a 2v2 team debate where we talk about real-world issues—government action, political consequences, and the ethics behind all of it! Like in the real world (and unlike other debate formats), we have the freedom to write our own plans and advocacies instead of defending an entire resolution.
Policy is the ultimate team sport—everything is done with your partner and team, offering an unparalleled support network. This way, we can focus our attention on getting better at debating, which gives us our reputation for staying ahead of the curve on argument innovation, debate quality, and succeeding in every other event!
Fast-paced, in-depth debates over broad topics foster creativity that help you adapt to any situation, real-life or in round.
A full year centering around the same topic crucially allows you to pay attention to details, making each round unique and engaging.
There's a niche for everyone! Pick your own advocacies, read wide arrays of literature, and dive into topics only Policy can offer.
We have an amazing community of tight-knit partnerships and friendships, that we would love for you to join!
The Policy community extends far beyond Northwood, helping create long-lasting bonds between debaters, alumni, and beyond. Policy is one of the few debate events offered in college, giving High School debaters a competitive edge in this interconnected system.
Beyond debate, Policy helps debaters with fundamental skills in school and real life. Whether it be activism, argumentation, or analysis, Policy creates critical roots that help individuals develop communication-related skills that benefit them for years to come.
With alumni spanning from Northwestern to Johns Hopkins, UChig to Stanford, Policy has the most robust college acceptance track records in all of Northwood. Period. As an event, Policy is competitive both in and out of college, serving as a cornerstone to academic rigour and general success.
