Welcome to Congress! We're an individual event that is the perfect combination of both speech and debate! In Congress, it doesn't matter if your side wins or loses, but rather how effective you are at getting your point across and refuting the other side! The best part is that you get to pick what side you are arguing for/against, giving you so much more creative liberty than other debate events.
Congress generally has topics that are current and in the news, making research even easier. Like parliamentary debate, there isn't a lot of preparation. You get the bills/legislation that you will be debating about a week before the tournament, and the topics are different for every tournament.
Congress is a great way to improve your critical thinking skills, your ability to think on the spot, and just your public speaking skills in general. It's the perfect event for people of all skill levels in both speech and debate. Being able to effectivley convey your ideas in a short amount will only benefit you in the future!
Congressional debate gives you the chance to step up and give an uninterupted speech for a certain amount of time, allowing you to freely speak your mind! Even though you're debating, Congress is an individual event that isn't as technical like the other styles.
In your speech, you actively work to prove why the opposing opinion is wrong, and to convince the judges that your point is right. Also, after every speech, there is a chance for you to ask questions and find holes in the other people's arguments.
Simulation is the main focus of Congress. You act as if you are actual senators debating whether or not a bill should be passed. When referring to other people, you call them "senator". Many people choose to add in little phrases to emulate real senators!
