Social and emotional learning (SEL) is an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.
Irvine Unified School District is committed to embedding the CASEL 5 Social-Emotional Competencies within academic instruction so that every student can increase prosocial skills, executive function capacity, empathy, and higher-level critical thinking skills.
Benefits of SEL include:
More positive attitudes toward oneself and others
Enhanced self-efficacy and confidence
Empathy and connection
Commitment to school and a sense of purpose
Reduced conduct problems and risk-taking behaviors
Decreased emotional distress
Improved test scores, grades, and attendance
At school, students learn to:
Identify and name their feelings
Use coping strategies when emotions feel big
Solve problems with peers
Show empathy and kindness
Practice self-control and flexibility
Simple ways to reinforce SEL skills:
Talk about feelings and name emotions
Model calm breathing and coping strategies
Praise effort, not just outcomes
Encourage problem-solving (“What could you try next?”)
Practice kindness and empathy in daily life
Small moments at home make a big difference.
