Reading Counts is a Scholastic Reading program that Northwood students participate in each month. Once a trimester students take a reading test to determine their individualized reading, or Lexile, level. A student's Lexile number is personalized to their reading ability and allows students to read books that are at their reading abilities. A student's reading range is based on their Lexile number. Students can read 50 points above their Lexile and 100 points below.
4th Grade:
In fourth-grade, students are graded on their Lexile leveled test, based on a student chosen book and need to earn 6 Reading Counts points each month. All books in our school library and many in our classroom library have a Lexile level on them. Students are given three total chances to pass a 10 question test on their chosen book with a score of at least 70%.
5th Grade:
In fifth-grade, students are graded on their Lexile leveled test, based on a student chosen book and need to earn 10 Reading Counts points each month. All books in our school library and many in our classroom library have a Lexile level on them. Students are given three total chances to pass a 10 question test on their chosen book with a score of at least 70%.
After a student earns their points for the month, they are welcome to ready beyond their Lexile level. Missing points will count as a missing assignment towards Hall of Fame; however, a student's Reading Counts score, regardless of points will earn the test score they earned.
