This project allowed us, as IUI students, to attend an extracurricular activity or some school event. This allowed us to get involved at our schools a bit more. As well as, build stronger relationships with some of the students. Another important lesson from this, was to see how a school event can have a certain goals and how it can help the students in more ways than one. I also think it is important to connect back to what we learn in our college courses.
Participation in School Events – I received the opportunity to attend a school event for the 5th graders who will be attending Northwest middle school! I helped to answer students questions about art class at Northwest. I also got the opportunity to talk to students about their dislike of art and help them to find something they love.
Collaboration with Teachers and Staff – A great example of teamwork between the teachers during this event was how they organized with last minute changes. Admin, the morning of the event, changed the setup and where the different schools would be going. It was nice to see all of the teachers shift togetyher and adjust to the needs of admin. Some schools also showed up early, and they all were quick to aid them, even though they were crammed with other schools.
Impact on Students – Community engagement contributes to a positive learning environment by giving students a place. Students want to feel valued and safe, and this event help students to feel that. Going from elementary school to middle school is a big and scary shift. This event helped students to have an easier transition, as they got to see both the school and their specials classes before they had to choose.
