This is a project we worked on to help find areas in our field experience to help advocate for the needs of students. To quickly describe what I covered, my project was to advocate for students who have individualized learning plans. My mentor teacher, as well as other teachers, had not recieved their students IEPs, ILPs, and 504s. Therefore, they are not providing these students with what they are required. I came up with an advocacy plan to help solve this issue at my middle school.
Challenges Facing Middle Schoolers – A lot of students at Northwest have individualized learning plans. Although they do, a lot of teachers haven't recieved the plans to give the students the proper accommodations they are required to have. Therefore, students aren't receiving the education aids they are supposed to be getting.
Your Role as an Advocate – Your suggestions for supporting students' well-being at school.
Centralized System for learning plans- system would be accessible to all teachers and staff at all times. This would ensure that teachers would all have access to an online version of the plans.
Dedicated Personnel- Having one, maybe two, staff members in charge of distributing learning plans. This would leave accountability so admin couldn’t dodge this issue.
Parent workshops and communication channels- parents are able to easily talk about any issues they are seeing and they can also know more about what these plans are doing for their students.
Community Partnerships- Reaching out to organizations can help to give students additional resources, volunteers, and better advocacy.
Strategies and Resources – Share programs, policies, or approaches that would help middle schoolers succeed.
Mandatory Distribution Protocols- develop and enforce policies that make sure plans are passed out in a timely manner.
Regular Audits- Ensures compliance from all parties. This would check that all teachers have received and acknowledged the students’ plans.
Professional Development- PD would be offered regularly for 504s, IEPs and ILPs. These sessions would go over laws for special education and how to implement these learning plans.
Collaborative Teams- People who regularly go over learning plans and make sure they are up to date. This will help teachers continue to support students in the correct way.
