During the spring 2024 semester, I worked to design and develop a training module tailored for a warehousing/manufacturing audience. This project culminated in a 19-minute recording submitted to the instructor. This assignment required a formal presentation, which required me to create a Zoom room, develop a PowerPoint presentation, and deliver the training effectively. Reflecting on this experience, I can see how it has significantly contributed to my growth as both a Communicator and a Problem Solver, two key profiles of learning for undergraduate success at IU Indianapolis.
Communicator
One of the primary learning outcomes of this project was to enhance my communication skills. The process of creating and delivering a training presentation required me to articulate complex information clearly and concisely. I had to ensure that my audience, who may not have a technical background, could understand the content. This involved:
Structuring the Presentation: I organized my PowerPoint slides to include an introduction, expected learning outcomes, and a summative assessment. This clear structure helped me convey my message effectively.
Engaging the Audience: I used various media, such as visuals and interactive elements, to keep the audience engaged. Practicing my presentation multiple times allowed me to refine my delivery and ensure that I was speaking at an appropriate pace.
Feedback and Adaptation: After recording my presentation, I sought feedback from peers and made necessary adjustments. This iterative process improved my ability to communicate effectively and adapt my message based on audience needs.
Through this project, I demonstrated the Communicator profile by effectively conveying information, engaging my audience, and adapting my communication style to meet their needs.
Problem Solver
The project also required me to exhibit strong problem-solving skills. Developing a training module for a specific audience involved several challenges that I had to address creatively and efficiently. Key aspects of this process included:
Needs Assessment: Conducting a formal learning needs assessment for Assignment 3 was crucial in identifying the specific training needs of the warehousing/manufacturing audience. This step helped me tailor the content to address their unique challenges.
Time Management: Managing the presentation time was critical, as the recording was limited to 20 minutes. I practiced multiple times to ensure that my presentation was within the time constraints while still covering all essential points.
Technical Proficiency: Creating a Zoom room, recording the presentation, and using Kaltura My Media editing tools required technical skills. I encountered several technical issues along the way, such as audio synchronization problems, which I resolved through research and experimentation.
By overcoming these challenges, I demonstrated the Problem Solver profile, showcasing my ability to identify issues, develop solutions, and implement them effectively.
The Training Presentation project from spring 2024 has been a valuable learning experience that has enhanced my communication and problem-solving skills. By reflecting on this process, I can see how it aligns with the IU Indianapolis Profiles of Learning for Undergraduate Success. This project has not only prepared me for future professional endeavors but also reinforced the importance of continuous learning and adaptation.
