One of my most meaningful leadership experiences has been founding and facilitating a student Leadership Club for Black boys in grades 3–5. I created this club to provide young Black students with a safe, affirming space where they could develop leadership skills, explore their identities, and build confidence. Each week, we focused on topics like public speaking, teamwork, emotional intelligence, and goal-setting connecting those lessons to their everyday experiences in school and life. I designed the curriculum myself and titled the program LEADing with Mr. Smith. Through mentorship, culturally relevant discussions, and interactive activities, I saw these students grow into more vocal, responsible, and self-aware young leaders. This experience reflects my servant leadership style by centering student needs, and it also highlights transformational leadership, as I worked to inspire these young men to see their own potential and future power. Watching them stand up with confidence to speak, lead group activities, or encourage their peers reminded me why leadership isn’t about control it’s about empowering others to rise.
Serving as the Social Director for Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. in my Chapter, has challenged and shaped me as a campus and organizational leader. In this role, I’ve been responsible for planning and executing events that bring students together while aligning with our core principles of brotherhood, scholarship, and service. From step shows to community game nights and service events, I’ve learned to manage logistics, collaborate with other student leaders, and create events that are both engaging and meaningful. As a leader, I’ve used this role to practice authentic leadership by staying grounded in who I am while representing my fraternity with excellence and integrity. This experience also strengthened my skills in strategic planning, teamwork, and communication, all of which I know will serve me well as I continue my journey toward school leadership and community impact.
