collaboration with The Ohio State University and AAEEBL, hosted a rubric
‘show and tell’ on 29 November 2023.
ePortfolio aficionados from
five universities shared their ePortfolio rubrics, examples of student
ePortfolios, and the benefits/challenges of using their rubrics.

Ruth Benander: Ruth Benander, Ph.D., is a past Co-Director of the Learning + Teaching Center at the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College, and a close collaborator with Dr. Refaei. With Dr. Refaei, she collaborates on eportfolio design and implementation with publications in the International Journal of ePortfolios and the Journal for Research and Practice in College Teaching. She was a participant in the International Coalition on ePortfolio Research with Dr. Refaei, resulting in further research published in Teaching English in the Two-Year College. Dr. Refaei and Dr. Benander both contributed to the AAEEBL Field Guide to ePortfolio.
Shelley S. Brown: Shelley S. Brown is a tenured Senior Instructor of Sociology and Certified Gerontologist at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, Tennessee, where she started her employment in 2006. She earned her M.A. and Gerontology Certificate in 2004 from Middle Tennessee State University. She currently teaches Introduction to Sociology, Sociological Theory, Aging in American Society and is the Coordinator of Internships for Sociology, Social work and Criminal Justice. In addition, she oversees the TTU ePortfolio Project and is the Coordinator for the Social Work program at Tennessee Tech. Her research is focused on ways of increasing levels of critical thinking in higher education and taking a closer look at what sort of classroom activities and High Impact Practices can positively impact critical thinking among students. She has held workshops for both students and faculty, and presented and published this research at several regional and national conferences and in academic journals.
Amy Cicchino: Amy Cicchino, Ph.D., is Associate Director in the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. She is active in ePortfolio professional communities, like AAEEBL (the Association for Authentic, Experiential, Evidence-Based Learning) and HIPs (high-impact practices) in the States. She has used ePortfolios in a variety of writing-intensive courses and assisted faculty teams in developing ePortfolio programmatic curriculum across the disciplines. She is also interested in supporting faculty and staff in creating meaningful professional ePortfolios themselves as tools of reflection, networking, and a way to make visible their labor.
Debbie Oesch-Minor: Senior Lecturer in the Department of English Writing Program at IUPUI, in the IU side. Debbie is also the Interim Director for ePortfolios in the Institute for Engaged Learning and a Senior Faculty Fellow for Project-Based Learning. Her second-level students partner with local clients on a 10-week Recommendation Report that includes a project-oriented ePortfolio for clients like The Pacers, Eskenazi Hospital, Best Buddies, and more. Debbie advocates for "ePortfolio everything" and hopes IUPUI conversations about ePortfolios move away from Showcases to see the pedagogical value of project and course oriented ePortfolios. Brenda Refaei: Brenda Refaei, Ed.D., is the Co-Director of the Learning + Teaching Center at the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College. Along with Dr. Ruth Benander, she is an active eportfolio practitioner and researcher with publications in the International Journal of ePortfolios and the Journal for Research and Practice in College Teaching. She was a participant with Dr. Benander in the International Coalition on ePortfolio Research. She has supported faculty in implementing eportfolios in writing courses, first-year experience courses, and the college’s honor’s program.
Gail Ring: Gail Ring, Ph.D. is the Director of Service and Learning Partnerships for PebblePad North America. Formerly the Director of the ePortfolio Program at Clemson University. Gail has spent her career exploring how transformative learning experiences and thoughtful reflection can enhance educational outcomes. She is committed to student-centered learning; encouraging learners to document their journeys and articulate their evolving understanding through the use of ePortfolios.
Laura Struve: Laura Struve, Ph.D. is the ePortfolio Specialist in the Office of Academic Enrichment at The Ohio State University. With a background in educational development, Laura is excited about supporting faculty, staff, and students in ePortfolio pedagogy and practice.
Rachel Swinford: Clinical Associate Professor in the Kinesiology Department at IUPUI. Rachel is also a Senior Faculty Fellow in the IUPUI Institute for Engaged Learning for both First Year Experience and ePortfolios. Rachel teaches a variety of exercise science courses, leadership and teamwork development, and innovation in leadership. She is the team-lead for a program-level implementation of ePortfolios for all students in Kinesiology and leads the IUPUI Faculty Community of Practice on ePortfolios. Rachel served previously as the Interim Co-Director for ePortfolios, 2021-2023. She completed the AAC&U ePortfolio Institute and serves as a faculty-consultant with the AAC&U Institute.

Holy Grail of Rubrics for portfoliois a resource put together by members of Eportfolio Ireland to create an ePortfolio assessment rubric. The rubric was developed collaboratively during the Eportfolio Unconference in Dublin, Ireland, in 2018.
"VALUE rubrics are open educational resources (OER) that enable educators to assess students’ original work. AAC&U offers a proven methodology for applying the VALUE rubrics to evaluate student performance reliably and verifiably across 16 broad, cross-cutting learning outcomes" (AAC&U).

Join us for a tour-de-showcase at IUPUI featuring:
the 80+ student ePortfolios shared at the Life, Health, Sciences Internship Showcase
and
the packed ballroom featuring student ePortfolios at the Sophomore Internship Showcase
There will be food and conversations around showcasing student work and some formal programming related to ePortfolio showcases, identifying/sharing exemplars, and other nuts-and-bolts ePortfolio topics, like continuing these rubric and assessment conversations.
Fly in or drive over to Indianapolis. We'll start the event Thursday from 3:00-6:00 for folks who arrive early. Formal programming begins Friday morning at 9:00AM. [Want a hotel near campus? Consider the Marriott Downtown, just minutes from campus.]
