Leadership is something that is achieved through being aware of personal traits and developing the right skills necessary to influence others. Motivation is an important ingredient for a leader to want to lead others and be successful with their mission. Developing human skills is required to work with followers, peers, and subordinates to work together to complete organizational goals (Northouse, 2021, p. 57). Knowing a follower's strengths and weaknesses will help a leader be able to achieve things more efficiently. As a leader, it’s important to recognize that they aren’t perfect and aligning themselves with followers who can offset those strengths, will help them be more successful.
Strong leaders are able to adapt quickly to followers’ needs. This is helpful by having a blend of leadership styles. Situational leaders can quickly adjust to their followers’ growth by assessing what they need from them to succeed. Leaders also should understand followers’ motivations. Leaders should want to help their followers to improve performance and reach their full potential (Northouse, 2021, p. 191). As a leader, I think it’s important to have strong values that will help motivate me to do the right thing. Ethics is something that can’t be compromised and something a leader should always strive for. Being ethical as a leader will help set a standard for others to follow. I want to be a leader who leads by example. Implementing integrity, empathy, and courage will help improve my ethical decision-making skills.
Leaders are needed to serve the organization's purpose and the needs of their followers. Listening, empathy, and healing can help a leader understand their followers, and care about wanting to help them overcome their own problems. Teaching a follower to be resilient is important to help face obstacles that will occur. Foresight helps a leader to predict what they need to be ready for in the future (Northouse, 2021, p. 255). I think it’s important for leaders to build community by helping others in a positive way which will encourage followers to help the greater good.
As I continue moving forward, I will be faced with challenges that I need to adapt to. Being able to adapt to problems is needed for a leader to figure out solutions that impact many stakeholders. As a leader, I will have to help followers adapt to their own challenges. Creating a holding environment where followers feel safe enough to tackle their problems and not avoid them (Northouse, 2021, p. 292). Good leaders are able to provide conflict management since conflict and change isn’t avoidable.
In summary, being dedicated to being the best version of myself as a leader will help followers become the best versions of themselves. By blending different leadership styles, it’ll help me be flexible with followers and the organization’s needs. Understanding what is needed of me and being aware will be helpful to adapt to different situations. I want to continue to create goals for myself that will help me improve myself and my leadership capabilities.

Exploring ruins in Arles, France!
The highlight of my undergraduate experience was taking the initiative of the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go to Marseille, France. There, I got the chance to study sustainability and France's culture. In the future, I'd like to explore more opportunities to travel and explore different cultures that I'm not familiar with. This experience meets the communicator, community contributor, and innovator IU learning profiles.
During my Spring 2025 semester, I had the opportunity to intern at Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center in Talent Acquisition and Human Resources. This opportunity provided me hands-on experience working in HR. Internships provide students with the chance to decide whether they like or don't like working in a field. After this opportunity, I enjoyed my experience and want to continue exploring this field. This experience was challenging to balance school, working a part-time job, plus a part-time internship. This artifact meets the community contributor and communicator IU learning profiles.
