The SEA-Teacher Project, officially known as the Pre-Service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia, is an initiative of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO). It was launched in 2016 with the goal of revitalizing teacher education across Southeast Asia by providing pre-service student teachers with opportunities to practice teaching in different cultural and educational contexts. The program is designed for third- and fourth-year education students, giving them the chance to participate in a one-month international teaching practicum in a partner country within the region.

The program aims to develop student teachers’ pedagogical skills, improve their English proficiency (as all activities are conducted in English), and strengthen their adaptability to diverse learning environments. At the same time, it seeks to broaden their global perspective, foster intercultural understanding, and prepare them to become more effective and reflective future educators. Through this exchange, participants not only enhance their teaching methods but also gain personal growth by immersing themselves in different cultures, appreciating differences, and discovering commonalities.

The structure of the SEA-Teacher Program generally unfolds in four stages. Students begin with orientation and classroom observation, followed by serving as teaching assistants while preparing lesson plans. They then proceed to actual classroom teaching, completing at least 20 hours under the supervision of a mentor. Finally, participants are required to reflect on their experiences and prepare reports or blogs to document their journey. This process ensures that student teachers not only learn by doing but also critically reflect on their teaching practices.

Participation is open to students majoring in Mathematics, Science, English, Pre-school, Elementary Education, Physical Education, Social Studies, and other related fields. Since its establishment, the program has grown rapidly, engaging more than 2,300 student teachers from 136 universities across Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Japan. Universities that join the program enter into a cost-sharing system: the sending institutions handle selection, travel arrangements, insurance, and preparation of the students, while the receiving institutions provide accommodation, mentorship, school placements, and evaluation of performance.

The SEA-Teacher Program benefits student teachers by exposing them to real-world classrooms beyond their home country, giving them mentorship from experienced teachers, and strengthening both professional and intercultural communication skills. Each participant is typically assigned a mentor and a student buddy to help them adjust and succeed. Beyond academics, the program builds resilience and adaptability as students learn to navigate new curricula, teaching styles, and cultural settings.
