SHOPPING
School Supplies
The ISS Kiosk is an excellent place for basic school supplies, see the New Families Welcome for more information. Supply Bags can be ordered in advance so that your child/ren can collect them upon arrival at the school. Additional items are available from some of the supermarkets, Clas Ohlson or from Staples in Forus.
For school combination locks, try Clas Ohlson in the Kvadrat, AMFI Madla and Kilden shopping centres and Coop Bygg in Mariero and Madla, next to ISS.
Rain Gear and Outdoor Apparel
Here is some information about where to find some of those essential items that will keep your children both warm and dry in an area where you can experience all four seasons in a day. Norwegians say there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing!
You can buy rain gear and outdoor apparel at: Coop Obs! (Mariero), Europris (opposite ISS and in Hundvåg), Spar Kjøp (Hillevåg), XXL (Forus), Intersport (downtown and in AMFI Madla and Kilden centres), Barnas Hus (Forus), TINY (in AMFI Madla) and Stormberg (also in AMFI Madla).
In Norway children wear wool and fleece layers beneath the rain coats/trousers/suits. These are called "stilongs" and can also be found at the previously-listed stores and specialty wool shops like Nøstebarn.
You can also check Finn.no (search the “Torget” section) or join Facebook groups where parents sell used gear (e.g., “Kids Stuff for Sale in Stavanger”).
Tip: Buy good gear. Staying dry while outside will make your time in Norway more enjoyable!

Norway has a wonderful ‘open kindergarten’ (åpen barnehage) concept where parents of babies and toddlers can pay a small fee to meet up with other parents and children during the week for activities and conversation. While they are located in many neighbourhoods, three popular ones with the expat community are:
• Åpen Barnehage in Storhaug
• IMI Kirken Åpen Barnehage in Ullandhaug
• Dansehage in Hillevåg
A list of open kindergartens can be found on: https://relocation.no/expat-communities/local-information/stavanger/playgroups-and-playgrounds/
Play Groups and Baby Music
• Hundvåg/Hundvaag International
• Tippy Toes (a PWC group that meets in Sandnes)
• Little Stars (also meets in Sandnes)
• Baby & Toddler (held at BISS)
• Baby singing (babysang) (the “Stavanger for Mothers” book sold at the ISS Kiosk has a list of groups in the region)

AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
Co-Curricular Activities at ISS
ISS offers a wide range of activities for students. The list of activities can be found on this page and is updated twice a year.
1st Stavanger Scout Group
1st Stavanger Scout Group is an English-language Scout group which has a growing number of ISS students and parents as Scouts, Cubs, Beavers andl leaders. We use BISS Gausel's facilities as a base for our scouting activities, as well as the Godeset Speiderbase and varying locations in the greater Stavanger area for outdoor meetups. 1st Stavanger is part of British Scouting Overseas, and the wider, half-a-million strong, British Scouts movement. We currently run four sections: Beavers, for six to eight year olds, Cubs (eight to ten-and-a-half), Scouts (ten-and-a-half to fourteen) and Explorers (fourteen to eighteen). We accept girls and boys into our programme, and lean heavily on parents to help run our sessions. We meet on Thursday evenings, around 1700-1830, depending on the location. We also run camping events at weekends, with, of course, a close eye on the weather forecast.
Our programme is geared towards developing new life-skills (including parents!); weather permitting, our programme is predominantly outdoors. Activities include navigation and orienteering, kayaking, camping and shelter-building, pioneering, fishing, camp-fire building, marshmallow toasting, pop-corn making, cross-country skiing, avalanche training, outdoor cooking, bird-box building, star-gazing, nature-watching, and of course working towards the many badges and awards offered by the programme. Our activities make the most of the Norwegian outdoors, and complement the UK's Duke of Edinburgh Scheme.
More details about Scouts can be found at www.scouts.org.uk . If you are interested in your child joining, or joining as an adult volunteer, please reach out to the following e-mail addresses; Beavers: thomson.stephaniej@gmail.com; Cubs: eric.halstrom@me.com; Scouts: tim.monk68@gmail.com; and Explorers: onepip@hotmail.com.

Contact skills are gradually introduced with an emphasis on player safety and confidence building. All sessions are designed to be age appropriate and in line with rugby’s core values of: Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship. All practices are open to try the sport as well as to see what football is all about. After you try it, you might just want to be a Bull! No experience necessary. We practice Tuesdays from 17:00 to 18:30 and Thursdays 18:30 to 20:00. Ages 10-18. It is tackle football for everybody with the proper gear. We practice all year, but there are several seasons in which games are played based on age groups: U15 for 13+, U17 for 15+, U19 for 16+. We'll see you at Lura!"

Rosemaling - Traditional Norwegian Painting

Bring a touch of Norway into your home with this traditional Norwegian art form. Rosemaling is a Norwegian folk art that started in about 1740. Its name comes from the motifs of swirling flowers and leaves. This art form has since evolved into several different styles, the most popular being from Rogaland, Telemark and Hallingdal. I have been teaching rosemaling to the 4th graders of ISS for 10 years now, but I also give private lessons and sell an assortment of wooden rosemaling pieces. If you have something specific you would like me to paint, or if you would like to see what I have available, come and chat with me to find out more on my Facebook page (above).

Interested in learning to make silver chains based on silver rings – Viking chains – and learn an inspiring hobby? Making valuable things that will last for all years, for presents or for yourself. Attend a course in Stavanger. The courses are normally once a week for three to four weeks – most want to have a fourth session. Classes last for about 2 1/2 hours – starting 09:30/10:00 or 18:00. We start very easy with a rose-chain. Next pattern is the famous king (Byzantine) chain and then the round “brynje”. No soldering – only “clean” work. We will start easy – everyone can manage it! The course is free. The silver-rings for bracelet cost NOK 230 to 400 and up. Normally the participants spend about NOK 1000 for the three basic chains. All you need are two flat-nose pliers (NOK 150 each). I have those and even all the clasps you need. I prepare the rings for you. I will also demonstrate different basic silver-work techniques. The coffee is on! Come and begin an interesting and inspiring hobby. If you want to see and hear more about the chains and course, drop into Sliperiet on a Thursday or Saturday. Look on www.vejlgaardsverden.dk to see some examples of chains made by some of my clever students.

International Hiking Group Of Stavanger
Email: hiking@PWC-Stavanger.no
Facebook: PWC Hiking Group, Stavanger
If you enjoy hill walking or would like to try it, why not take this opportunity to join our group and experience some of the wonderful scenery and wildlife in the Rogaland area. We meet every Thursday morning during the school term at 9.15 a.m. at the Three Swords monument (Møllebukta) on Hafrsfjord. From there we drive, with the minimum number of cars, to our walking destination for the day (usually a drive of anything from ten minutes to three-quarters of an hour). We aim to return to the swords at around 2.00 - 3.00 p.m., in time for school pick-ups. The group leaders, who are familiar with the area, usually decide our destination, once they have seen what the weather is like. We walk come rain, wind or shine so a stout pair of boots and a set of waterproofs are often a necessity. The group also provides plenty of opportunity to socialise as we do a lot of chatting en route and we always stop for a picnic lunch at around midday.
PLEASE NOTE: you must be a member of the PWC in order to participate in the group. We also have a private Facebook page, which is open to members. Just search for PWC Hiking Group, Stavanger from within Facebook and request to join the group.

Need to get out and get moving? Want to meet new people and enjoy walking, jogging or running? Then we hope you will join us on Monday and/or Friday mornings. ALL abilities welcome! Monday mornings at 8:45 AM. Mosvatnet Circular Trail: Mosvatnet is a beautiful lake close to Stavanger. The 3 km lighted trail is relatively flat and goes around the edge of the lake, passing Rogaland Art Museum and Mosvangen Campsite. Stronger runners can run several loops around the lake and those getting started can have the option of a 3 km, and building to a 6 km. A good place for more experienced runners to work on speed and/or 'fartlek' training; this is a perfect trail for beginners, or those “getting back into shape”. We will be out on trail for about 45–60 minutes, join for as much or as little as you like! We meet at the parking lot marked for Mosvangen Campground. Henrik Ibsens Gate 19, 4021 Stavanger, Norway. Parking is free! Friday Mornings 8:45 AM. Stokka vatnet: Stokka Lake is a beautiful lake close to the centre of Stavanger; popular with walkers, runners and cyclists. There is a very nice, though somewhat hilly 8.5 km (5.3 miles) lighted trail that goes around the edge of the lake. You can walk, jog or run. We will be on the trail for roughly 60 minutes; those that finish first can walk/jog back to pick up others. Out and back is another option as you build up to full distance. We park and meet across from Madla Amfi off 509 (Madlaveien) by the crazy/colourful painting of a funny looking man. Parking is free.
Outdoor Swimming
Most of the swim halls/pools are open on Sundays for family swimming. Check the municipality (kommune) websites of Randaberg, Sola, Sandnes and Stavanger for hours.
The Stavanger Kommune website has information about places to swim outdoors.
Badedammen is a salt-water pond with a sandy area under the bridge in Storhaug. Myklebust in Tananger is a designated swim area on the sea.
For fjord swimming, Vaulen (Vaulen), Godalen (Storhaug), Møllebukta (Hafrsfjord) and Sande (Randaberg) beaches are lovely while also providing grills for picnics.
Hellestø, Vigdel and Ølberg beaches south of Sola beach (Solastrand) are beautiful spots. Ølberg has a little marina and camping.
