MYP advisory teachers are the Service as Action advisors for their students. The primary role of a Service as Action advisor is to facilitate, support, and help manage the Service Learning cycle for Service as Action initiated by the student to complete a Service as Action activity. Beyond face-to-face meetings and advisory time, most information that a Service as Action advisor communicates is on ManageBac.
A Service as Action advisor:
Approves an SA activity, communicates with the student during the process, approves completion of the SA activity.
Conducts two interviews with their students, once in the Fall and then the Spring term regarding student SA work and progress.
Updates SA student progress on academic progress reports issued four-times a year.
Shares pertinent information and handouts with students.
A Subject Teacher:
Is required to connect the curriculum they teach with Service as Action opportunities for students. At least one unit of study, from any subject, will have a direct link and clear outcome for completing Service as Action in every year of the MYP.
An MYP subject teacher:
Provides ideas and/or specific tasks for students to complete Service as Action.
Will brainstorm with students at the beginning of units to come up with Service as Action ideas.
Uses the Service Learning cycle to promote Service as Action and student ownership of learning
