Students taking ownership of their own learning is a central component of the MYP at ISSR. Thoughtful and positive Action (learning by doing and experiencing) by each student plays a supportive role in this acquisition. Service (thoughtful and positive action) requires students to connect what they learn in ISSR’s MYP programme with their community in some relevant and meaningful way. These connections to community, whether local, regional or international, support the ISSR vision of an engaged individual in society.
The Service Learning Cycle is an educational framework used to support Service as Action and acts as a Step-by-Step checklist to ensure appropriate investigation, planning, action, and reflection. You will find this cycle in use throughout the International Baccalaureate and is very similar to the Design Cycle with a few obvious deviations.
Below is the cycle diagram illustrating how this cycle can be used by an MYP student: Students and educators at ISSR will use this 4-part cycle to support Service as Action. The poster is found in each teaching classroom and especially in advisory classrooms.
