ISSR hosts a variety of engagement opportunities with CAS Clubs. For a list of these activites and contact people, plesae follow the appropriate link to the CAS Website. Participation in CAS Clubs hosted by the Diploma Programme (DP) students is always encouraged and is always a productive way to develop relationships and collaborate with students of other grade levels and programmes, thus growing the school community and encouraging engagement.
Requirements for MYP students for participation in CAS Clubs:
Involvement in clubs, societies, or events is encouraged and welcome to volunteers and do not necessarily need to be Service as Action activities; it is the choice of the participant to their level of engagement but in the event that it is intended to be a Service Action, necessary time of 2 weeks pre-planned notice before the action should be allowed to complete the Investigation and Designing and Preparing Phases
DP students can not offer service credit in in clubs or activities without explicit permission of the Service as Action Coordinator, which needs to clarify the requirements for service in the club
Sustained participation over a longer period of time is likely required for most clubs; depending on the lengths of the projects, an appropriate number of learning outcomes should be chosen
Being a member of a club does not automatically earn your service credit; you either need to be actively involved in planning one part of an activity, event, or project to meet service learning objectives and learning goals
Examples of how this might look for a few popular CAS clubs:
UN Day / Model UN Club - You must actively plan, host, and execute a UN Day activity, documenting your steps
Drama Llamas - You must actively plan your own engagement depending on your participation (your action plan), so if you are an actor you should consider your practice success criteria, and your rehearsal plan of action, taking into consideration the plan of the club for rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and performances
Phantoms - You must go beyond being given tasks such as to be a stage hand or similar; you must be able to prove that you were actively involved in planning and your own learning of some technical skills (lighting, audio control, stage management etc.) and participating in 1-2 events
If you are invited to a ManageBac Group, and are "Approved" by the group owners, it will automatically create an activity in your IB Manager SA worksheet which should be edited before your adviser can approve. This should be done as soon as possible to joining the club.
If the group description has not included inquiry questions, you must edit the description to meet the needs of the Service Learning Cycle's Investigation stage (the four aspects of this stage)
Once you have changed the details for your involvement like dates, you must change the adviser name and details to your classroom adviser unless otherwise instructed
Advisers should not approve activities with descriptions, and ATL Skills & Learner Profile boxes that do not follow the Service Learning Cycle
The SA or the CAS Coordinators reserve the right to deny service credit to any students at any time that do not provide adequate:
i. engagement,
ii. documentation, and/or
iii. evidence of the Service Learning Cycle.
If you have any questions, you should consult the Service as Action Coordinator to help clarify expectations or give advise.
