For the MYP at ISSR, it is required that all students have thoughtfully used the Service Learning cycle to create and complete Service as Action activities that show proper evidence of all seven learning outcomes for service being met.
All seven learning outcomes for service must be met and completed by the end of MYP 5.
For each year of the MYP, students are required to be involved with and complete some form of
Service as Action at least once, which represents minimum 1 learning outcome.
Guiding Principles:
It is up to the student to decide how to do this with support from their Service as Action advisor (mentor teacher) and classroom teachers. Sometimes outcomes are planned for the student by subject teachers and sometimes the students plan an activity independently based on their own interpretation of learning.
Every activity initiated by the student must be APPROVED by their advisor prior to planning or taking action. Activities documented or completed retroactively are not considered appropriate for service action credit. So plan at least 2 weeks advance of intended service!
Students need to provide regular communication with their advisor on SA progress completed. All parts of the Service as Action activity must be documented properly and thoughtfully on the student’s ManageBac account including the required evidence collection at each stage of the Service Learning Cycle.
Students should follow the instructions found in this this hub resource each time they interact with a SA activity. In the Step-by-Step guide, students can see an example of an activity from beginning to end with reminders/tips throughout.
