Google Workspace For Education is a set of educational tools designed by Google. This group of tools is usually referred to as an LMS (Learning Management System) and its purpose is to support student learning through the monitoring and sharing of student work. It is where assignments are set, resources are shared and where teachers give feedback.
It is important to note that this is different from our DMS (Data Management System). The DMS is where students personal information is stored. This includes contact information, medical records, attendance data, behaviour data and reports. Our DMS system is called Engage. Students have no interaction with the DMS.
We use GSUITE (Google Workspace For Education) as it allows us to move beyond the traditional paradigms of education and thus create a rich, dynamic and high quality learning environment. Teachers and Learners can work anytime and anywhere using a powerful set of tools; tools that allow for instant feedback and the tracking of progress to support personalised learning to take place.
Google Classroom is the main platform of the education suite. It allows for communication and workflow between teachers and students through a highly dynamic and interactive dashboard. It helps students and teachers organise their work as well as providing innovative ways of providing feedback. Parents can "opt in" to see weekly reports of work completed, upcoming deadlines and resources shared.
Google Drive is where student work is stored. It is cloud based so allows access wherever there is an internet connection. Students will not have a huge amount of interaction with Drive as the Classroom environment keeps everything organised for them.
Google Calendar offers an intuitive and easy to use calendar. All Google classroom assignments show up automatically on the calendar. This is very useful for both parents and students.
Google Mail is used as the login and the students school e mail account. It is made up of their first name, the first letter of their surname plus their student number. For example John Smith might have the login JohnS.6545@ismonaco.com. Gmail for schools comes with a wide range of restrictions and options to help us monitor and secure student accounts. More detail on this is set out below.
Google Docs is a word processing software that offers students the ability to collaborate, comment, correct and suggest edits live on the document. When combined with Google students and teachers are able to take workflow and sharing to new and exciting levels. Along with Docs the Google Suite also provides students with Slides (Presentations), Sheets (Spreadsheets) and Forms (surveys & quizzes)
When in school, devices must be set up on the school wifi. SIM cards or any other method of accessing the internet is strictly prohibited.
Use your child's ISM GMail account to set up the Google apps; your child will also use this account if asked to sign up for any learning platforms. their address will be made up of their first name and their student number:
The lock screen of your child's device has been personalise with your child's name
There should be NO social media apps, inappropriate games, SIM card or VPN's enabled during school hours. If these are found we will ask them to be removed or disabled in consultation with parents.
A note on other games and apps
Some apps and games have educational value and are appropriate in school. It is impossible to list all of these but we are happy to make sensible concessions.
Some apps and games have educational value but are a distraction in school. An example might be Minecraft. We recognise that these should stay on a personal device but should be locked during school ours using the Screen Time feature in iOS
Some apps and games have limited educational value but do have entertainment value and families may wish them to remain on the device. Netflix would be a good example. Again these types of apps should be locked during school hours. We use our filter and internal security to block when possible.
Some apps and games are not appropriate in school. These include Social Media, violent games and age inappropriate material. We take this seriously and students should have these on their devices and we will ask them to be removed in consulation with parents.
We appreciate your support with this drive. If we act as one around these standards we will all benefit.
Set up FIND MY iPAD. This allows lost devices to be quickly recovered or locked.
Students devices must be fully charged each day. Students must bring their headphones.
The REQUIRED APPS have been installed by the school on your child's device
Common Sense Media is a non-profit organisation that provides parents and educators with up to date information to support us with keeping children safe online. They review books, movies, TV shows, video games, apps, music and websites, rating them in terms of age appropriateness, educational content, positive messages, violence, sex and profanity. Do check out the site when you are helping your child to make good media choices. At school we make use of resources from this site to deliver our Digital Citizenship programme.
ISM is working with the Monaco authorities and receiving specialist expert advice on the use and storage of data. Data protection is becoming more and more of an issue in the modern world and we are committed to ensuring all of our systems are compliant with both European and Monaco regulations. There are a few key terms that it is useful for you to be aware of with regard to what information is stored and where:
Our Data Management System is on run on a database called Engage. and this is where personal information is stored. This includes:
Contact details, medical information, behaviour logs, assessment reports attendance, student learning needs, timetable and family information.
The DMS is linked to internal school servers and the data is stored onsite. The DMS is not linked to student G Mail accounts and the two systems do not talk to each other.
Our Learning Management System is the core Google Suite for enterprise.. It is a highly collaborative and innovative way of sharing resources, gathering feedback and generating effective and efficient workflow between teachers and students. It is the world leading software in this area and utilised by many international schools around the world. The core education suite also means that there is no advertising allowed through the system and the school administrator has a wide range of controls over access and privacy. Work is saved in the cloud and not on internal servers meaning that students can access their work from anywhere.
