The ACT is an entrance exam used by most four year colleges and universities to make admissions and scholarship decisions. It is a multiple-choice, pencil-and-paper test administered by ACT, Inc. The purpose of the ACT test is to measure a high school student's readiness for college (in subject areas of English, Math, Reading, Science, and Writing). Scores provide colleges with one common data point that can be used to compare all applicants. Check with the colleges of your choice for admission requirements. Students also receive an ACT report that provides information about college readiness and personalized career pathways. Students will also be able to select up to four colleges to send their ACT score to at no cost prior to testing day.
While students are not required to take the ACT plus Writing, we highly recommend that students interested in attending a four year college consider which institutions require the Writing or by looking at specific college websites to make an informed decision.
The ACT may be retaken if a student wishes to raise their score. Sign up on the ACT website by creating an account and entering your ACT ID (found on your score report). Test dates for the upcoming year are linked below.
Some colleges and universities are going "test optional" meaning you may submit your ACT scores but are not required to. Generally, if you did take a standardized test like the ACT/SAT and did well and you feel as though the scores accurately reflect your abilities, admission reps would encourage you to include test scores. However if you did not take the test or if you did but scores don’t reflect your abilities (for example, you don’t test well or have anxiety or were sick the day of testing), perhaps choose to omit scores. Check the websites of the individual public or private institutions that you are interested in to know if this is a requirement for admission. Keep in mind while Admissions might waive the ACT requirement, Scholarship Considerations might still require a score! Be aware of each college’s process. Discuss this with your counselor if you have further questions.
