Tumblr is a cross between a blog and Twitter. It is a streaming scrapbook of text, photos and or video and audio clips. Users create and follow short blogs, or "tumblogs" that can be seen by anyone online if they are made public. Many teens use them to share photos, videos, thoughts and things they find funny with their friends.

Twitter

Twitter is a microblogging tool that allows posts up to 140 characters, called "tweets" and follow other user's activities. It's not only for adults. Teens like to share posts and keep up with news and celebrities.

AskFM is a social network that allows you to ask questions to your friends or others who use the service. You can ask questions about life, religion, politics, books, pop culture, food, and more. Questions can be asked anonymously.

YouTube

YouTube is a video-sharing site and app. Many kids love YouTube and use it to keep up with popular culture. Videos go "viral" when viewers share the clips they like.

Houseparty - Group Video Chat

Houseparty is a way for group of teens to connect via live video. Two to eight people can be on the chat at the same time. If someone not a direct friend joins the chat, teens get an alert in case they want to leave. You can also "lock" a chat so others can't join.

LiveMe allows kids to watch others and broadcast themselves live, earn currency from fans and interact live with users without any control over who views their streams.

YouNow lets kids stream and watch live podcasts. As they watch, they can comment or buy gold bars to give to other users. The goal is to start trending and build a fan base.

TikTok is a performance and video sharing network that features teens in any number of scenarios, lip syncing to playing practical jokes, to anything that they think can get views and attention. Users can build up a following among friends or share posts publicly.

Calculator% is a popular hidden-photo vault app where users can place photos to keep them out of view from parents, friends and teachers. These apps are disguised as a calculator, game or file manager, but are actually a password protected vault.

Snapchat is a popular app that allows users to set a time limit on pictures and videos they send before they disappear. Most teens use it to share goofy or embarrassing photos without the risk of them going public. However, it can be used in many ways.

Whisper is a social "confessional" app that allows users to post whatever is on their minds, paired with an image. Given the wide range of emotions running through teens, anonymous outlets given them the freedom to share feelings without fear of judgment.

Tellonym is an anonymous question asking app similar to Whisper. It has an age limit of 17+, but most teens ignore the age limit by clicking the box that says they are over 17.

GroupMe is an app that does not charge fees or have limits for direct and group messages. Photos, videos and calendar links can be shared.

Kik Messenger is an app that lets kids text for free. It has no message limits or fees with the basic features. Texts will not show up on standard messaging service, so not charged for them.

WhatsApp lets users send text messages, audio messages, videos and photos to one or many people with no message limits or fees.

Grindr is the most popular dating app for gay, bisexual and transgender adults and bills itself as "the world's largest LGBTQ+ mobile social network."
