Security Process Summary

LockDOWN

For use when there is a threat or intruder inside the building.

When the announcement is made:

  • Clear all students, staff and visitors from hallways immediately
  • Report to nearest classroom
  • Assist those with special needs or accommodations
  • Close and lock all windows and doors
  • Cover windows to hallways with pre-designed papers or posters
  • Shut off lights
  • Be quiet
  • Silence all cell phones and direct students not to text or call parents
  • Stay away from all windows and doors
  • Do not open the classroom door for any reason (unless directed by law enforcement)
  • If a fire alarm has been activated, do not evacuate unless fire, or smoke is visible
  • Wait for further instructions


Enhanced LockDOWN

These are not listed in any order. LockDOWN options may not be appropriate for all ages or abilities. Using the information that is being provided at hand you must decide if you will... LOCKDOWN • EVACUATE • DEFEND

LOCKDOWN

  • Use standard procedures outlined above
  • Be prepared to act should an intruder enter the room

EVACUATE

  • Evacuate if provided a safe corridor or if locking down is impractical and seemingly safer to go offsite
  • Evacuate could mean just simply finding a safer place to lockdown
  • Once you have evacuated, notify administration with your location and attendance
  • Stay at that offsite location until advised by district administration

DEFEND

  • Defend / protect yourself and your students by any means necessary if confronted with an imminent threat
  • Defend does not mean pursing the intruder

LockOUT

For use when there is a threat outside the building or there are threatening circumstances that people need to be kept away from (i.e., medical emergency or disturbance).

When the announcement is made:

  • Lock all exterior doors
  • Cover exterior windows, draw shades
  • Keep students away from windows
  • Continue classes as usual
  • Move on announcement only
  • Wait for further instructions

Evacuation

For use when conditions outside are safer than inside.

When the announcement is made or alarm sounded:

  • Take the closest and safest way out – look at building map (use secondary route if primary route is blocked or hazardous)
  • Take roll book for student accounting
  • Assist those needing special assistance
  • Do not stop for student/staff belongings
  • Go to designated assembly areas
  • Check for injuries
  • Take attendance: report any missing students to principal’s office

Reverse Evacuation

For use when conditions inside are safer than outside.

When the announcement is made:

  • Move students and staff inside as quickly as possible to designated area (events will determine designated area)
  • Assist those needed special assistance
  • Check for injuries
  • Take attendance: report any missing students to principal’s office
  • Wait for further instructions

Severe Weather Safe Areas

For use in severe weather emergencies.

When the announcement is made or alarm sounded:

  • Take the closest and safest way out as posted on building map (use secondary route if primary route is blocked or hazardous)
  • Take roll book for student accounting
  • Take attendance: report any missing students to principal’s office
  • Assist those needing special assistance
  • Do not stop for student/staff belongings
  • Close all doors
  • Remain in safe area until the ‘all clear’ is given
  • Wait for further instructions

Drop, Cover & Hold

For use when there is imminent danger to the building or immediate surroundings.

When the announcement ‘TAKE COVER’ is made:

  • DROP: to the floor, take cover under a nearby desk or table and face away from the windows
  • COVER: your eyes by leaning your face against your arms
  • HOLD: on to the table or desk legs, and maintain present location/position
  • Assist those needing special assistance
  • Wait for further instructions
