The Work Experience Program allows eligible juniors and seniors to earn elective credit while working. Students gain valuable workplace experience while developing skills that prepare them for future careers.
This program is a great option for students who are balancing school and work and want to earn credit for the skills they are building on the job!
Students must:
Be in 11th or 12th grade
Have a school-approved job
Be able to meet the minimum weekly work hours
Stay in regular communication with the Work Program Coordinator
This program may be a good fit if you:
Have a part-time job (or plan to get one)
Can balance work and school responsibilities
Want to earn elective credit while gaining real-world experience
Are interested in developing career-ready skills
Students who work at least 5 hours per week may earn 1 elective credit per trimester by enrolling in the Work Seminar course.
In addition to working, students will:
Complete weekly online assignments
Reflect on workplace experiences
Learn about:
Workplace expectations
Communication and teamwork
Career exploration
Goal setting
Personal finance
Submit copies or photos of pay stubs to the Work Program Coordinator
Students who work at least 15 hours per week may earn 2 elective credits per trimester.
To earn 2 credits, students must enroll in both:
Work Seminar Online
Work Experience (On-the-Job) Online
Students complete the same weekly coursework while also maintaining the required work hours.
Students are expected to:
Maintain employment throughout the trimester
Work the required number of hours each week
Complete weekly online assignments
Submit pay stubs as requested
Communicate with the Work Program Coordinator if employment changes
Demonstrate professionalism at both school and work
How do I sign up?
Contact your school counselor to see if there is room in the work program web courses.
Is it online or in person?
All the work program courses are online and do NOT have google meets.
Can I join mid-trimester if I just got a job?
No, you can not join mid-tri, but you can talk to your counselor about getting into the program for the next trimester.
How many hours do I need to work?
1 credit: Minimum 5 hours per week
2 credits: Minimum 15 hours per week
Can I earn 2 credits?
Yes. To earn 2 credits per trimester, you must enroll in both the Work Seminar and Work Experience courses and work at least 15 hours each week.
Where do I go during this class period?
Students are assigned to the cafeteria to work on their online courses. Some students choose to take the work program course(s) as an additional elective (a 7th class for the trimester) and will need to complete homework on their own time.
I have work at 2pm, can I leave school?
If your work schedule conflicts with your school schedule you need to contact your school counselor right away. In some cases, your online period can be placed at the end of the day so you can leave school early to get to work.
Do I have homework?
Yes. Students complete weekly online assignments related to workplace skills, career readiness, and personal finance.
Do I have to submit proof that I'm working?
Yes. Students submit copies or photos of their pay stubs to verify employment.
What if I lose or quit my job?
Contact your Work Program Coordinator immediately. Changes in employment can affect your course credit, so it's important to communicate before leaving a job whenever possible.
