Below are the expectations for incoming cross country captains. Each captain must agree to these expectations to be considered by the coaching staff. These are non-negotiable expectations that we have for our team leaders. To ensure strong leadership, these expectations need to be public so that there is a clear understanding of what it means to be a captain for the cross country team. We expect captains to fully commit themselves to the team both in season and out. This is more than just a title or an award to be won. The role of captain requires both discipline and sacrifice. In return, each captain will strengthen themselves as both an athlete and as a leader making our team stronger beyond their contributions as a runner. If you cannot commit to these expectations, you cannot be considered as a candidate.

As a captain, I commit to:

1) 100% Attendance in season (including all August practices and meets).

2) Arriving at least five minutes early to practice each day and starting warm-ups on time.

3) Leading and modeling a good warm-up both daily at practice and at meets.

4) Rallying teammates at meets to cheer on other athletes.

5) Being a positive team presence at all times (practice, meets, in season and out).

6) Being a communicator between athletes and coaches.

7) Helping lead school recruiting.

8) Supporting and encouraging teammates and our team environment by planning, participating and encouraging participation by all teammates in team building activities.

9) Being a role model and mentor to younger athletes (this means routinely going beyond your immediate group of friends to include all of your teammates).

10) Fully participating in structured summer off season training.

11) Leading practices during the summer off season. Between yourself and the other captains, it is your responsibility to have at least one captain present each summer weekday for practice.

12) Arriving to the season at your top level of fitness when formal August practices begin and being able to consistently lead by example during the season in both practices and meets.
