Use AI Safely

AI tools may collect, store or process the information you enter. Before sharing anything with an AI system, consider where that information might go and who has the right to use it.

Protect your privacy, your work and the work of others.

Protect personal information

Do not enter information that could identify you or another person.

This includes:

• Full names

• Home addresses

• Personal email addresses or telephone numbers

• Passwords or account details

• Student identification numbers

• Birth dates

• Live locations or travel plans

• Photographs that reveal someone’s identity

• Medical, financial or family information

• Private conversations

If personal information is not necessary, leave it out.

Keep confidential information private

Do not upload or describe information that has been shared with you privately.

Examples include:

• Confidential school documents

• Private feedback or correspondence

• Student records or assessment results

• Unpublished schoolwork

• Internal meeting notes

• Information about another person’s health or circumstances

• Materials that your teacher has not authorised you to share

If you are unsure whether something is confidential, do not upload it.

Follow age requirements

AI platforms may have minimum-age requirements or require permission from a parent, guardian or school.

Before using a tool:

• Check whether you meet its age requirement.

• Use a school-approved account when instructed.

• Follow your teacher’s directions.

• Read the school’s guidance on AI use.

• Ask an adult if the terms or privacy information are unclear.

Being able to access a tool does not necessarily mean you have permission to use it for schoolwork.

Protect your own work

Uploading your work to an AI tool may allow the service to store or process it.

Before uploading your work:

• Check whether AI use is permitted for the task.

• Remove personal or confidential information.

• Consider whether the work is unpublished or assessed.

• Use only the part of the work necessary for your purpose.

• Keep your original version.

• Check the platform’s privacy and data settings when possible.

Do not upload an entire assessment simply because you want feedback on one part.

Respect the work of others

A person’s writing, artwork, images, recordings, code and ideas belong to them.

Do not:

• Upload someone else’s work without permission.

• Ask AI to imitate a classmate’s work or personal style.

• use another person’s name, photograph or voice to generate content.

• Share collaborative work without agreement from the group.

• Enter copyrighted material when you do not have permission.

• Present AI-generated versions of another person’s work as authentic.

Permission and acknowledgement still matter when AI is involved.

Use only the information you need

Share the minimum amount of information required to complete your purpose.

Instead of entering real details, you can:

• Remove names and identifying information.

• Use fictional examples.

• Summarise the relevant issue.

• Share a short extract rather than a complete document.

• Describe the type of feedback you need without uploading the work.

Respond to unsafe or inappropriate content

AI tools can generate disturbing, harmful or inappropriate material.

If this happens:

1. Stop the conversation.

2. Do not share or reproduce the content.

3. Save appropriate evidence only if your teacher requires it.

4. Tell a trusted adult, teacher or librarian.

5. Report the content through the platform when appropriate.

Never follow AI-generated instructions that could harm you or another person.

Before you submit information to AI

Pause and check:

• Does this contain personal information?

• Does it reveal information about someone else?

• Is any part of it confidential?

• Do I have permission to upload this work?

• Does the tool meet school and age requirements?

• Could I remove or replace identifying details?

• Would I be comfortable showing my prompt to my teacher?

Remember

If information is personal, confidential or not yours to share, do not enter it into an AI tool.

When in doubt, stop and ask your teacher, librarian or another trusted adult.
