Turnitin at ISB:
Turnitin is an educational tool that supports academic integrity, responsible source use, feedback, and revision. It compares submitted work with material from websites, publications, and previously submitted papers, then produces a Similarity Report highlighting matching text.
Important: Turnitin does not determine whether plagiarism has occurred. A similarity score shows how much text matches other sources; teachers must review the matches in context.
At ISB, access Turnitin here and use your school Google Account to sign in.
Make sure that you have:
Followed the assignment instructions
Included your name and the correct title
Cited all quotations, ideas, images, and other sources
Added a bibliography or works-cited list
Checked the deadline and resubmission policy
Uploaded the correct and final version of your work
Open the Turnitin assignment provided by your teacher.
Select Submit or Upload Submission.
Upload your document from your device, Google Drive, or OneDrive, depending on the available options.
Check the title of your submission.
Select Upload and Preview.
Review every page to make sure that you uploaded the correct file and that it displays properly.
Select Submit.
Wait for confirmation before closing the page.
Save your digital receipt or submission ID as proof of submission.
Turnitin normally accepts only one document per assignment. If you need to submit several files, ask your teacher whether to combine them. Resubmissions are available only when enabled by the teacher.
If student access has been enabled, select the similarity percentage beside your submission to open the report.
The report highlights text that matches material in Turnitin’s database. A match may be:
A correctly cited quotation
A title, common phrase, or reference
Text that needs clearer paraphrasing
A source that has not been acknowledged
Part of an earlier submission
There is no universal “good” or “bad” similarity percentage. A low score does not guarantee academic integrity, and a high score does not automatically indicate plagiarism. Review the individual matches and their context. Understanding the similarity score
When permitted to revise:
Open each significant match.
Check whether direct quotations use quotation marks and citations.
Make sure paraphrases are genuinely written in your own words and still cite the original source.
Add any missing references.
Speak with your teacher or librarian if you are unsure.
Resubmit only if your teacher has enabled resubmissions.
Do not rewrite simply to reduce a percentage. The goal is clear, original writing and responsible use of sources.
When setting up a Turnitin assignment:
Add a clear title and instructions.
Set the start date, due date, and feedback-release date.
Review the submission and Similarity Report settings.
Decide whether students may view their reports.
Decide whether resubmissions and late submissions will be allowed.
Explain citation expectations and how the report will be used.
Add a rubric or assessment criteria where appropriate.

Use the report as the beginning of an academic review—not as an automatic judgment.
Examine individual matches, not only the overall percentage.
Consider the assignment type, subject, and expected use of sources.
Check whether quotations and references are correctly acknowledged.
Remember that bibliographies, templates, and common phrases may produce matches.
Use exclusions and filters carefully and consistently.
Discuss significant concerns with the student and review drafts, notes, and sources when appropriate.

If enabled at ISB, the AI Writing Report is separate from the Similarity Report. Turnitin states that its AI model can misidentify both human- and AI-generated writing.
