Use AI safely

• Do not upload personal, confidential or unpublished work.

• Use school-approved tools and follow privacy requirements.

• Respect copyright and protect your own and others’ intellectual property.

AI & Academic Integrity

AI tools may collect, retain or process the information entered into them. Some services may use submitted material to improve their systems or may store it outside the school’s digital environment.

Before sharing anything with an AI tool, consider:

• What information am I providing?

• Who owns it?

• Do I have permission to share it?

• Where might it be stored?

• How might it be used?

• Is this tool approved for schoolwork?

Protect your privacy, your assessment work and the rights of others.

Important for DP coursework

Do not upload complete or substantial sections of unpublished DP coursework unless the use has been explicitly authorised.

This includes:

• Extended Essays

• Internal Assessments

• TOK essays and exhibition commentaries

• Written assignments and portfolios

• Visual arts process or comparative study material

• Collaborative project work

• Recorded performances or presentations

• Teacher feedback and annotations

• Examination or restricted assessment materials

Your coursework, drafts and process evidence help establish authentic authorship. Keep original copies and retain your revision history.

Protect personal information

Do not enter information that could identify you or another person.

This includes:

• Full names

• Home addresses

• Personal email addresses or telephone numbers

• Passwords or account details

• Student identification numbers

• Birth dates

• Live locations or travel plans

• Photographs, video or audio that reveal someone’s identity

• Biometric information, including faces and voices

• Medical, financial or family information

• Private conversations or correspondence

If identifying information is not essential, leave it out.

Removing a person’s name may not be enough if other details could still reveal their identity.

Keep confidential information private

Do not upload or describe information that has been shared privately or is restricted to the school community.

Examples include:

• Confidential school documents

• Student records or assessment results

• Private teacher feedback

• Internal correspondence or meeting notes

• Unpublished coursework

• Examination questions or secure assessment materials

• Information about another person’s health or circumstances

• Materials that a teacher has not authorised you to share

If you are uncertain whether something is confidential, do not upload it.

Protect research participants and data

DP research may involve surveys, interviews, observations, experiments or data provided by other people.

Do not enter into an AI tool:

• Participant names or contact details

• Interview recordings or transcripts containing identifying information

• Survey responses linked to individuals

• Sensitive medical, cultural, political or personal information

• Images or recordings collected without permission for AI processing

• Confidential datasets

• Data covered by consent, ethical or access restrictions

Anonymising information does not automatically give you permission to upload it to an external service.

Before using AI to process, classify, translate or analyse research data, consult your teacher or supervisor and confirm that the proposed use meets the ethical requirements of the investigation.

Follow platform and school requirements

Before using an AI tool:

• Confirm that it is approved for school use.

• Check whether you meet its age requirements.

• Use a school-approved account when instructed.

• Review the tool’s privacy and data settings.

• Follow the teacher’s directions for the assessment.

• Check whether prompts or uploaded material may be retained.

• Ask the teacher, librarian or DP coordinator if the terms are unclear.

Being able to access a tool does not mean that you have permission to use it for a particular assessment.

Protect your own work

Uploading work to an AI service may allow the platform to store, process or reuse it.

Before uploading any part of your work:

• Confirm that AI use is permitted for the task.

• Consider whether the work is unpublished or assessed.

• Remove personal and confidential information.

• Share only the minimum material required.

• Keep an unchanged original version.

• Preserve drafts and version history.

• Check the platform’s privacy and data controls.

• Consider whether you could request general feedback without uploading the work.

Do not upload an entire assessment when a question or short extract would be sufficient.

Respect intellectual property

Writing, artwork, photographs, music, recordings, code, research and ideas may be protected by copyright or other intellectual-property rights.

Do not:

• Upload another person’s work without permission.

• Ask AI to imitate a classmate’s work or personal style.

• Use another person’s name, face or voice to generate content without consent.

• Share collaborative work without agreement from the group.

• Upload teacher-created or copyrighted materials without authorisation.

• Use AI to remove attribution or conceal the origin of material.

• Present synthetic or altered material as an authentic record.

• Assume that material available online is free to reuse.

Permission, attribution and citation still matter when AI is involved.

Protect collaborative work

Group work belongs to everyone who contributed to it.

Before using AI with collaborative material:

• Discuss the proposed use with the group.

• Obtain permission before uploading shared work.

• Do not enter another student’s ideas, writing or data without consent.

• Keep a record of how AI contributed.

• Make individual and group contributions transparent.

One group member cannot give away everyone else’s work.

Use only the information you need

Apply the principle of data minimisation: share the smallest amount of information necessary for the permitted purpose.

You can:

• Remove names and identifying details.

• Use fictional or generic examples.

• Summarise the relevant issue.

• Share a short extract rather than a complete document.

• Ask for a feedback checklist instead of uploading a draft.

• Describe the type of support required without providing sensitive content.

If the task can be completed without uploading the material, do not upload it.

Respond to unsafe or inappropriate content

AI tools may generate disturbing, discriminatory, harmful or inappropriate material.

If this occurs:

1. Stop the interaction.

2. Do not share or reproduce the content.

3. Preserve appropriate evidence only if required for reporting.

4. Tell a teacher, librarian, counsellor or another trusted adult.

5. Report the content through the platform when appropriate.

Never follow AI-generated instructions that could harm you, another person or the school community.

Before entering information into an AI tool

Pause and check:

• Is the tool approved for this task?

• Does the material contain personal information?

• Does it reveal information about another person?

• Is any part confidential, restricted or unpublished?

• Is it part of DP coursework or assessment?

• Do I own the material or have permission to share it?

• Is research-participant data involved?

• Could I remove or replace identifying details?

• Could I share less information?

• Do I understand how the platform may store or use it?

• Would I be comfortable showing the prompt and uploaded material to my teacher?

If any answer concerns you, stop and ask before proceeding.

Before you submit

Check that:

• I used a school-approved tool and followed the assessment instructions.

• I did not upload confidential or restricted material.

• I protected personal and research-participant information.

• I obtained permission before sharing anyone else’s work.

• I respected copyright and intellectual-property rights.

• I retained my original work, drafts and revision history.

• I documented and acknowledged permitted AI use.

• I can explain what information I shared and why.

• I accept responsibility for the final work.

Remember: If information is personal, confidential, restricted, unpublished or not yours to share, do not enter it into an AI tool. When in doubt, pause and consult your teacher, supervisor, librarian or DP coordinator.
