AI & Academic Integrity

AI can support your learning, but it must not replace your thinking, creativity or responsibility. Use AI openly, critically and only when it is permitted.

Your teacher’s instructions and the requirements of the assessment always take priority. Permission to use AI for one task does not mean that it is permitted for another. If you are uncertain, ask before using it.

Important for DP assessment

Permission to use AI depends on the subject and task. Any AI-generated text, image, graph, code or other material included in assessed work must be clearly identified in the work and appropriately referenced in the bibliography.

You must be able to explain and defend every part of your submitted work as an authentic reflection of your own knowledge, understanding and abilities.

Check before using AI

Pause and consider:

• Is AI permitted for this specific task or assessment?

• Which types of AI assistance are allowed?

• What is my purpose for using it?

• What thinking, analysis and learning must remain my own?

• How will I document and acknowledge its contribution?

• Would I be comfortable explaining my AI use to my teacher or supervisor?

Do not assume that AI is permitted because you used it for another subject or assignment. If the instructions are unclear, ask before proceeding.

Verify AI-generated information

AI can produce information that sounds convincing but is incomplete, biased or incorrect. It may also fabricate quotations, data, references and sources.

When consulting an AI response:

• Check important claims against reliable and authoritative sources.

• Verify names, dates, quotations, statistics and references.

• Confirm that every cited source exists and supports the claim being made.

• Look for errors, omissions and oversimplification.

• Consider which disciplinary, cultural or geographical perspectives may be missing.

• Consult and cite the original source rather than an AI summary of it.

• Do not assume that a confident or polished answer is correct.

You remain responsible for the accuracy and quality of every piece of information you use.

Protect information and intellectual property

Protect yourself, other people and their work.

• Do not enter personal, medical or confidential information.

• Do not upload another person’s work without permission.

• Do not share unpublished coursework or assessment materials.

• Do not upload teacher feedback, examination materials or confidential data.

• Use school-approved tools and accounts when required.

• Follow platform age requirements and privacy guidance.

• Respect copyright, consent and ownership of text, images, data and code.

Once information has been entered into an AI tool, you may lose control over how it is stored or used.

Credit and document AI use

Explain which AI tool you used, why you used it and how it contributed to your work.

If AI-generated material appears in an assessed task:

• Clearly identify it in the body of the work.

• Reference it appropriately in the bibliography.

• Explain how the material was generated and used.

• Retain relevant prompts, outputs, drafts and revision history.

You may adapt this acknowledgement template:

I used [name of AI tool] to help me [describe the permitted purpose]. I evaluated its response and used it to [explain its contribution]. I verified relevant information using [identify sources or methods] and completed the analysis, decisions and final work independently.

An acknowledgement explains your process. It does not replace a citation when AI-generated material has been quoted, adapted or included.

Demonstrate authentic authorship

AI should support your learning—not perform the intellectual work being assessed.

• Think about the task before consulting AI.

• Develop your initial ideas and research direction independently.

• Produce your own analysis, interpretation, argument and conclusions.

• Treat AI suggestions as possibilities rather than final answers.

• Question, reject or revise suggestions using your own judgement.

• Do not simply paraphrase AI-generated writing to make it appear original.

• Make the final decisions yourself.

• Be prepared to explain every part of your work.

DP coursework develops over time. Keep evidence of your process through notes, research records, drafts, feedback and revisions.

Before submitting, ask:

Does this work genuinely represent my own understanding and abilities, and can I explain and defend every part of it?

Confirm assessment expectations

If you are uncertain about responsible AI use:

• Check with your subject teacher or assessment supervisor.

• Ask the librarian for help evaluating information, locating original sources or creating citations.

• Consult the DP coordinator if assessment requirements remain unclear.

• Review the school’s academic-integrity policy and current IB guidance.

• Ask how AI use should be acknowledged and referenced for the particular task.

Ask before using AI—not after completing or submitting the assessment.

Examples of responsible use

When explicitly permitted, AI may help you:

• Generate keywords or search terms.

• Explain a difficult concept for you to verify through course materials.

• Suggest questions for further investigation.

• Create practice questions or revision activities.

• Identify possible gaps in your understanding.

Specific permission may be required before using AI to:

• Plan or outline assessed work.

• Provide feedback on a draft.

• Revise, edit or translate your writing.

• Summarise sources or class materials.

• Generate text, images, graphs, data, code or other content.

• Analyse evidence or suggest conclusions.

Do not use AI to:

• Complete intellectual work that you are expected to undertake yourself.

• Produce analysis, interpretations or conclusions for you.

• Submit AI-generated or AI-rewritten content as your own.

• Invent evidence, quotations, data, results or references.

• Avoid reading or engaging with assigned sources.

• circumvent your teacher’s instructions or assessment requirements.

• Conceal or misrepresent how your work was produced.

Before you submit

Check that:

• My use of AI was explicitly permitted for this assessment.

• I followed the instructions provided by my teacher or supervisor.

• I completed the required thinking, analysis and decision-making myself.

• I verified important information using reliable original sources.

• I clearly identified AI-generated material included in the work.

• I referenced that material appropriately in the bibliography.

• I documented my AI use and retained process evidence where required.

• The writing, argument and conclusions genuinely represent my understanding.

• I can explain and defend every part of the final work.

• I take full responsibility for everything I have submitted.

Remember: AI may support your learning, but you remain the author and are responsible for the integrity, accuracy and authenticity of the final work.
