Content Objective: Use a microscope to identify parts of a cell and to calculate the size and magnification of cells and use this information to create scientific drawings of cells. To observe the characteristics of life in unicellular organisms.
Language Objective: Create a labeled diagram of eukaryotic cells with correct labels, titles and scale bars and determine the size of organism from drawings and pictures taken from microscopes.
Activity 1 - Virtual Microscope
This activity will look how a microscope works. If you are unsure about how a microscope works, please start with "learn"
If you are comfortable using a microscope please go straight to "explore" and make sure you look at the following slides:
Plant Cell - 4x to 40x
Whitefish Interphase - 4x to 40x
Bacteria - Gram-stain - 4x to 40x
Please take a screenshot of each one at 40x and try to label as many parts of you can see.
Activity 2 - Calculating Magnification
A. Please see these two videos on how to convert units and calculate magnification.
Video 1: Converting Units and Magnification
Video 2: Calculating Magnification
B. Please complete this worksheet on Converting Units
C. Please then complete these Practice Microscope Problems and submit on Google classroom.
Activity 4 - Using ImageJ to Measure
Using ImageJ
2. Please watch the video below on how to use ImageJ
400X Calibration Picture (Nikon Eclipse E100 Only) - This will be needed for the next step.
3. Pictures Onion and Elodea to analyze
When you have calibrated ImageJ please pick two pictures from this folder. I would like you to figure the average area of onion and elodea cells by sampling 10 cells in each picture. Make sure you have calibrated for 400x and you are using 400x pictures. Please see number two on how to do this. Please submit your data on Google Classroom as a fully formatted data table with averages.
Activity 5 - Cell Theory Question Follow up
Please watch this video. This will walk you through how an IB question is graded.
Pick one question from this document, using the guidelines below and grade it.
Period 6 - Pick one to grade between 2 and 5
Period 5 - Pick one to grade between 4 and 8
