Sketching Instructions

Pencil Sketching & VIsualization

Drawing for Understanding

Options:

  1. Students will create 20 sketches of structures and the environments that they are found in. Students will observe and through their sketches illustrate and display the response of the building or structure to the plot of land upon which it rests. This is an exercise in understanding the way in which the structure and its land relate as well as observing the effects both have on the other.
  2. Students will create 20 sketches of terraformed plots or sites and illustrate the manner in which the land has been altered to improve its function and form as it relates to the current usage. This is again an exercise in developing an understanding of the changes that designers have wrought on the site and how these have affected the usage of the land.
  3. Students will create 10 sketches of each of the above options. These will perform the same tasks as stated in the previous descriptions but, will be a balance of the two options so as to allow students to easier access different locations and observe different features and solutions.

Sketch Requirements:

  1. Sketches will be created by the individual student and are intended to allow the student to experience the site and intently study the location and the design solution through observation and interpretation. Students are not required to create what could be termed art but more accurately a visual study of various locations and architectural design solutions.
  2. Sketches will be created on standard bond (20# white) paper that is no smaller than an ANSI A sheet (8.5x11 inches).
  3. Sketches and sketched information will occupy the majority of the drawing sheet and will be done in a medium of the student's choice. Pencil/Graphite is suggested but color pencils, ink, watercolor, conte, etc are acceptable but in no way required.

Submission Requirements:

  1. Students will submit sketches in groups of five (5) at a time on the assigned due dates to the Canvas/Classroom for evaluation.
  2. Sketches will be scored on criteria as shown here and are expected to show improvement through concerted effort and practice.
    1. Scoring:
      1. 20% on proportion;
      2. 20% on shape and form depiction;
      3. 20% tonal values;
      4. 20% on textures;
      5. 20% on line work;

Submission Dates:

  • Set one is due at the end of the second week of the quarter — Sketches 1 through 5
  • Set two is due at the end of the fourth week of the quarter — Sketches 6 through 10
  • Set three is due at the end of the sixth week of the quarter — Sketches 11 through 15
  • Set four is due at the end of the eighth week of the quarter — Sketches 16 through 20
  • All sets must be submitted by the Friday before week 10

Alternate assignment: (504/IEP)

For students that may need assistance this assignment can be completed as a photo essay that will incorporate 40 images instead of the 20 sketches following the same general requirements as the sketching for each option. As photographs are not as time demanding as hand made sketches. This alteration will be at the instructor's discretion and must have approval before images are captured in any photographic manner.
