Reading Strategies

If you are concerned about your child's reading ability please speak to your child's teacher and or the reading specialist.

Reading with your child should be an enjoyable experience for you both. If it becomes frustrating, tell them the word.

Here are some prompts you can give your child to help:

1. Point with your finger.

2. Look at the picture and think about what makes sense.

3. Get ready to say the first sound of the tricky word.

4. Reread and try it again.

5. You got the first part but look at the second part (or ending) and vice versa.

6. Does it have an ending?

7. Look for a part you know.

8. You know this part, can you use it to help yourself?

9. Ask: Does it make sense? Does it sound right? Does it look right?

10. What else can you try to help yourself?
