What are the benefits of using a flipped classroom model?

  • Students are able to learn the material presented at their own pace and virtually anywhere with a wifi connection. They have more control over their learning. In the traditional classroom setting, students are bound by the pace of their peers within the course, or possibly are rushing to catch up to their peers. Through the use of video lessons, students are able to pause or replay any part of the lesson as needed as many times as needed.

  • The teacher is present when the students are applying their knowledge. In the traditional classroom, students are given an assignment to take home and complete after listening to a lecture. If while at home, the students have additional questions regarding the assignment, they have limited resources to turn to. Consequently, a student must wait until the next day to get help or turn in incorrect homework. Changing "home"work into class time allows the teacher insight into which concepts, if any, that their students are struggling with and helps the students accordingly. Now the students receive immediate feedback about their understanding of the concepts and receive more one-to-one interaction.

  • It promotes student-centered learning and collaboration. Flipped classrooms allow class time be used to master skills through discussions. This encourages students to teach and learn concepts from each other with the guidance of their teachers. By allowing students to partake in their own learning, they are able to own the knowledge they achieve, which in turn builds confidence.

  • It promotes more efficient use of time. The time students spend on watching the videos (15-25 minutes) is likely less time than they would have spent completing a traditional assignment, allowing them more time for other activities. It is very convenient for student athletes, those who participate in school clubs or the arts, students who work, or students who have missed time in school, for various reasons, to be able to pick up a device anywhere and get caught up on the video lessons taught.

  • There is growing evidence that the flipped classroom model can improve student achievement in nearly any subject. According to the Flipped Learning Network, 71% of teachers who flipped their classes noticed improved grades, and 80% reported improved student attitudes as a result.
