WORKSHOP ON LONG-FORM FEATURE WRITING
Resource person Ms. Ankita Dwivedi
Department of Multi Media and Mass Communication witnessed one of its most enriching and interactive workshops by Ankita Dwivedi Johri, Senior-Editor at Indian Express on February 29, 2020. Dwivedi is also an esteemed alumna of the department. She graduated in 2009 and had received a fully-funded scholarship to study MA in Television Journalism at Goldsmiths, University of London.
Her session focused on the structure and style of long-form feature writing. She further added her insights from her coverage of Nirbhaya hearing, abrogation of Article 370 as well as Delhi riots. Explaining the various nuances of her job, she highlighted the intricacies of feature- writing and editing, as well as the ways to interview and file stories.
She also inspired students to persevere, follow-up on interviewing people as well as roles of networking. She elucidated the challenges faced by women journalists as well as the hectic lifestyle in print journalism. She gave suggestions on how to take notes, narrate the events and how to incorporate the right characters in story-telling formats.
As per her personal point of view, ground-reporting is the toughest part of the job. She recommended students to devote their time religiously while ground-reporting. She was asked good questions by the students about the challenges faced by her and how to cover stories in a deeply polarized times to which she shared her personal experiences and the lessons she learnt during her work.
