WEBINAR ON CAREERS IN PUBLISHING INDUSTRY
RESOURCE PERSON: Ms. Neeta Gupta
The Department of Multi Media and Mass Communication in association with Oghma, the English Editorial Society of the college organized a webinar on ‘Careers in Publishing Industry’. The speaker Ms. Neeta Gupta is a publisher and the founder-director of Yatra Books. She is a literary consultant with specialization in translations. She also works as the editor of Bhartiya Anuvad Parishad’s quarterly journal on translation - Anuvad.
Her session began with a discussion on paperback and digital publishing, the difference between the two and their relevance in contemporary times. She also talked about her work towards creating publishing connectivity across different languages and cultures. The webinar was attended by students and teachers of different courses and colleges across the nation. As the festival co-director of Jaipur Bookmark, that runs parallel to the Jaipur Literature Festival, she also briefed the audience about the platform that it creates - bringing together publishers, literary agents, writers, translators, translation agencies and booksellers from across the world.
The webinar was interactive session where Ms. Gupta addressed the queries of more than 100 participants with utmost patience and detail. She gave insights on the strategies that are adopted within the publishing industry to promote paperback publishing in the time of kindles and audio books. This engaged discussions on copyright issues especially in the case of translations and the emergence of vernacular languages with respect to published literature. She also talked about self-publishing and how can one gather an audience for their work through social media. Students were guided about internships and the different roles that one can take up in the industry. She talked about the planning, marketing, copy-editing, designing, sales, legal and production aspects of publishing as well. Through anecdotes of her experience, the speaker was able to advise aspiring writers and translators. She emphasized on originality of work and research. The principal Prof. Babli Moitra Saraf thanked the speaker for resolving the participants’ queries and appreciated the response of the students. The webinar proved to be extremely insightful and informative for students and teachers within the comfort spaces of their homes.
