Report on ‘Best Out of Waste Workshop’
“The earth has enough resources for our need but not for our greed.”, MK Gandhi.
The department of Multimedia and Mass Communication organised a field trip to Satyagraha Mandap, Rajghat on 20th October, 2023 for a ‘Best Out of Waste Workshop’ conducted by Ms Nehmat Mongia who has specialised in design from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad.
This workshop was attended by 73 students escorted by Dr Girish Shastri from the MMMC Department. The workshop began at 10:30 am with the introduction of the organising committee. The gathering was then addressed by the chairperson of the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Smriti (an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture.
Students were engaged in activities concerning reuse an upcycling of waste materials. Ms Nehmat explained that as a designer, she is aware of the amount of waste that is produced in the process of designing. She has therefore, taken this initiative to turn waste into décor and utility items. Using waste plastic, clay, glass bottles and paints, students created a variety of different artwork and put their imagination into play. Each student was given a Khadi tote bag to design. All the artwork created will be displayed at exhibitions in the near future. In the process students understood that sustainability is the need of the hour considering the population growth and resource requirements. With heavy brainstorming, they were able to realise that a lot of waste can be turned into items of utility very easily. They were able to bring their ideas to life with the help of this workshop.
The workshop was concluded with lunch followed by a group photography session. Students got the opportunity to interact with ‘sustainability enthusiasts’ and they were able to appreciate such efforts and join the pioneers in this righteous virtue.
