LGBT+ from Iowa City Community School District
Advisors: Tony Balcaen and Jill Humston
Meeting Dates and Times: Mondays at 4:00 PM
Meeting Place: Room 3303
This club is potentially going to be divided into two clubs (that's why two names) and each club will meet every other Monday after school in room 3303. GLOW will focus more on sexual orientation issues and EQuAls more on sexual identity issues. During these meetings, we discuss whatever the students want to discuss, we do little potlucks, craft things, watch LGBTQ+ movies. We go to the Governor's conference on LGBTQ+ issues every year in Des Moines and more.
The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) enforces, among other statutes, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. Title IX protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive Federal financial assistance. Title IX states that:
No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.
