Term 2

Week 9

Our last week of term is now complete! A huge thank you to Primary 7 for being such a good help this week with all of the chaos! We had great fun and hope everyone is looking forward to a weel earned break over the festive period.

Shared Learning

As part of our final week, Primary 5, 6 and 7 all joined together into 3 mixed age group teams and worked their way round 3 different activities led by Miss Shepherd, Miss Walker and Mrs Bell. Miss Shepherd led a music activity where the pupils developed their music reading skills and played various Christmas tunes on different instruments. Miss Walker did a snowy scene piece of artwork using black paper and chalks. Mrs Bell led a STEM session where they had to work in groups to build a cardboard gingerbread house and then light it up using simple circuits. All children worked so well together and we were very impressed with their hard work and attention to detail during the final week of term!

Christmas Party

P5, 6 & 7 had their Christmas Party on Wednesday. There was lots of dancing and music in between some classic party games, as well as some new ones that we learned too!

Mr C's Christmas Challenge

Fun Assembly!

Mr Connon prepared a very funny and entertaining assembly for us all to enjoy on the last day of term. Some of the staff were turned into elves! We sang along to lots of our favourites Christmas songs and had lots of giggles.

Traitors!

With Traitors the TV show returning to our screens in the New Year, I had been explaining to the class what the show was about and how I had often tried to figure out ways it could be played in school.

P7 were a big help in letting me try it out with them! It seemed to work well so I think there could be a high chance of us playing it again in 2024.

Nessie Knighthoods

There were lots of Nessie Knighthoods flying around on Friday! Firstly, a big well done to this individual for their hard work and dedication to the Nessie Natter Community Group. When some residents from a local Care Home came to watch our dress rehearsal, this individual was beyond polite and welcoming to them on their arrival and departure.

Well done to this individual who was given a Nessie Knighthood from Miss Shepherd this week because they had been very mannerly and helpful throughout the week during their music lesson and when helping P5 with their entries for Mr C's Christmas Challenge!

It was decided that the teachers were deserving of a Nessie Knighthood too! I was kindly given one for my love of cardboard and being so dedicated to sustainability! (I'm a terrible keeper of cardboard because you just never know when it might come in useful for a STEM or art task!)

Enjoy the holidays over the festive period and I look forward to welcoming you back to school in 2024!

Week 8

A week filled with rehearsals, Christmas shows and the beginning of festive chaos in Primary 7! A huge thank you if you came along to watch "Christmas at the Castle" on Wednesday or Thursday. We were delighted to have such lovely audiences on both afternoons!

Dress Rehearsal

On Monday afternoon, we had our dress rehearsal for our show. It went well and we were glad to have the opportunity to practise in front of a small audience!

Visitors to our show!

Our Nessie Natter Community Group sent out an invitation to residents from our local care home, inviting them in to watch our show! It was lovely to have them join us, and members from the Nessie Natter Group shared Christmas Cards that they had made with the residents and staff that joined us.

Christmas-ifying Primary 7!

After weeks of being asked to make the classroom more festive...it was finally time to give in and add some extra decorations! P7 learned how to make these beautiful snowflakes out of paper. Later on in the week, 2 of the P7s made special yellow and blue snowflakes for Mr Connon's office windows!

Micro:Bits

Over the week, we had a couple of different challenges using the Micro:Bits. A few weeks previous, we had worked hard to create a code after learning about Alan Turing and his code breaking skills during WW2. The children then had to crack the other groups codes using questions about WW2 that would have answers using digits.

Then on Wednesday, P7 joined an online Christmas Coding session led by the BBC. We learned how to brighten and dim the LED lights using Make Code programming.

Sawing skills

I enlisted some extra helpers to prepare resources for a card making lesson for next week!

Health and Wellbeing

Primary 7 have been learning about substance misuse and the impact of peer pressure as we grow up. We have been discussing the impact of our choices on keeping our bodies healthy. The class have been very mature in their discussions. Well done P7!

Nessie Knighthoods

A big well done to this individual for always being so kind and willing to help others!

This individual displayed superb team working skills during our micro:bit lessons this week! Keep it up!

Week 7

A quieter week on the photo front this week as P7 were very busy completing their NSAs in class. They worked so hard and were very focused throughout. Now that this week is over, we can enjoy some more festive fun!

Primary 7 Transition Ceilidh

On Thursday, P7 went along to Inverness Royal Academy to begin their transition before starting Secondary school in August 2024! They were an absolute credit to the school and their behaviour was superb. It was a brilliant way to meet the other P7 pupils from various schools, all whilst enjoying a wee ceilidh! A big thank you to the staff at Inverness Royal Academy for organising this and giving our P7s the opportunity to visit the building before the end of term 2.

Christmas Show Rehearsals

The whole school has been working really hard to rehearse and practise for "Christmas at the Castle" on Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th of December. P1-3 have been working on McTivity, whilst P4-7 have been preparing songs to sing for you.

Christmas Fair

Primary 7 totalled up all of the money they had raised from the Christmas Fair on Monday morning. They made a grand total of £313.47! We are all so proud of their hard work and support on Saturday. This should definitely help cover the costs of the bus!

STEM: Trick Shots

When we had a bit of extra time in class, we did some work on creating our very own trick shots using materials from around the room/ shared area and ping pong balls!

There was lots of fun when doing this! Although, every time we went to film someone completing the trick shot, we would miss. As soon as we stopped filming, someone would manage successfully!

Some pupils build different scoring systems, others attached cups to the wall to throw ping pong balls into and others created ramps.

Their creativity was superb!

P7 are probably fed up of me going on about the importance of strategy and logical thinking!

Logic/ Strategy Games

We took some of these games out one morning to change it up and develop our skills!

Some were much, much trickier than they looked!

Week 6

This week was chaotic filled with preparations for the Fair, celebrating Scottish Reading Week and learning more ceilidh dances ready for the Transition Ceilidh.

P7 have been a delight as always!

spelling sounds - s, ss, se, c, ce

Our spelling pattern this week has been a little trickier and involved learning various rules to help remember spellings. We will focus on these words and next weeks for the remainder of term 4.

Spelling race!

A favourite game in P7 is "Spelling Race!"

Woods Visit 5 (Our final visit this term)

We had our final visit to the woods this term. We used our knowledge and skills from last week to complete a challenge to find various trees to fit differing age brackets. They then had to use their language skills to come up with 3 adjectives to describe the tree. The aim was to not repeat any adjectives on their sheet of paper!

A huge thank you to Mr Chiffers and Mrs Ahmed who have joined us on our visits to the woods the last 5 weeks. Their time is much appreciated and hope that you enjoyed yourselves as much as we did!

Scottish Reading Week

This week, Ness Castle celebrated Scottish Book Week. We had lots of different activities planned for us by Miss Walker, Miss Munro and the Library Nessie Natter Group!

Paired Reading

Primary 3 came to join us for paired reading 3 times throughout the week. It was so lovely to see everyone enjoying stories together.

Scottish Poetry

On Thursday, we spent time in the morning reading poems written by Scottish Poets in Scots. We identified different Scots words and also attempted to read them aloud to one another in our best Scots accents.

We also went on a book hunt on Thursday around the school trying to figure out the clues from Miss Walker and Miss Munro. P7 enjoyed the challenge!

Christmas Fair - Saturday 2nd of December 2024

Our week was definitely dominated by preparations for the Christmas Fair at the weekend. A huge thank you to all the helpers that came along on Saturday and gave up your time! It was hugely appreciated and we managed to raise a whopping £323.49! P7 should be VERY proud of themselves. They were a credit to the school with their behaviour and manners on Saturday.

Nessie Knighthood

This individual has been a huge support in getting the class ready for the fair and also come up with some excellent fundraising ideas for us to use. Thank you so much for all of your hard work!

Week 5

Enjoy looking through our learning from this week in Primary 7.

spelling sound - j, g, ge, dge

Our spelling sound for this week. All pupils will have these words at home to practise independently. We also played a few games in class using these words and sounds.

Semantic Gradients

This week we worked on synonyms for the word 'hot' when referring to temperature.

World Children's Day

On Monday, P7 were asked to consider the changes that they would make to Ness Castle if they were the Head Teacher.

Monday 20th of

We discussed the UNCRC and made sure that any suggestions were in fact in keeping with their rights.

November 2023

P7 had some very interesting ideas which we are going to use as topics for debate and persuasive writing over the coming weeks.

Woods Visit 4

On our visit to the woods this week we learned how to calculate the age of a tree. We discussed the method used if you have a cross section of a tree available to count the rings. Then we learned that the circumference of the tree trunk (from around 1m off the ground) divided by 2.5 will give as accurate an age as possible without being able to count the rings!

Visit from Inverness Royal Academy Maths Teacher

On Wednesday P7 had a visit from Ms Grant, a maths teacher from the Academy.

Ms Grant worked with the class on their understanding of decimals and identified some common misconceptions that are made when it comes to decimals.

It has been so lovely to meet some of the teachers from the Academy!

Christmas Fair Preparations

Primary 7 have started their preparation of items to sell at the Christmas Fair next weekend!

Be sure to join us and get your hands on some goodies!

Ceilidh Dancing

Ceilidh dancing has begun in Primary 7! We have a transition ceilidh coming up at the Academy, so this is the start of our preparations! Details to follow about the ceilidh soon.

Coding

We did some work this week involving coding and creating a quiz based on our knowledge of WW2! This was after learning about the work of Alan Turing and his involvement in cracking the Enigma code. Next week the class will have a go at cracking one anothers codes!

Celebrating Achievements Assembly

Well done to these 2 individuals for their superb achievements outside of school in Shinty and Highland Dancing!

Nessie Knighthood

A huge well done to this individual who worked so well during our visit to the woods this week. They were engaged, motivated and determined to complete the challenge set during our time outside!

Week 4

Thank you so much to all Parents/Carers that attended the Parent Appointments this week. It was so lovely to see you all and have the opportunity to talk about the wonderful work your child has been doing. Please know that if there is ever anything that I can do at all to help, do not hesitate to get in touch!

Enjoy looking through our learning from week 4!

spelling sound - ch/ tch

This week with our spelling sound we focused on the skill of rhyming and played a game of spelling bingo...which became very competitive!

There, Their or They're?

After seeing this common mistake in P7s written work, we spent time this week revising the correct use of the different spellings of there, their and they're.

On Tuesday we used the Micro:Bits on our Chromebooks for the first time.

Micro:Bits

The class learned about the programming platform that we will be using, "MakeCode".

We found creative ways to make our spelling words appear on the Micro:Bits!

This week the class were given different words for cold.

Semantic Gradients

We are continuing to work hard to broaden the vocabulary used in written work.

P7 worked in small groups to create a sliding scale of synonyms for cold. They worked so well together!

Maths

We are almost finished our topic of time. Some groups started to learn about 24 hour time, others looked at using bus timetables and answering questions from the information they could see.

P7 are also discussing decimals and fractions on a regular basis to help build their understanding of these tricky areas within maths. This week we looked at improper fractions and converting them to mixed numbers. The concept was slightly more challenging on Tuesday but by Wednesday the class were professionals! Well done P7!

HWB

As part of our Health and Wellbeing lessons this week, we spent an hour outdoors in the woods, played some hoop games and learned the Gay Gordons! Have a look at the pictures below.

Christmas Fair Preparations

Preparations for the Christmas Fair have begun! With just 2 weeks until the Fair we have lots and lots to do, but I have every faith that P7 will work hard over the next few weeks to make lots of lovely things to sell!

All the hard earned money from the fair will go towards funds for the Primary 7 residential trip to Loch Insh.

Celebrating Achievements

Well done for your team work at a Shinty competition over the weekend!

Well done for moving up a level at your swimming lessons!

Nessie Knighthood

Well done to this individual for their effort and brilliant attitude during ceilidh dancing at PE!

Week 3

A lovely week in Primary 7! Looking forward to another - although the weeks are fairly flying in and some Christmas Fair prep will need to be started very soon...eek!

Spelling sound - f, ff, ph, gh

This week we focussed on our new sound. The class came up with lots of very impressive words including these sounds!

Spelling Race Game

On Tuesday we had a spelling race against a partner. This is a well loved game in class as we all like a bit of competition!

Semantic Gradients

Having now worked with the class for 2 terms, it has become apparent that spending time expanding our vocabulary would be worthwhile to support and extend our literacy work. After being on a literacy course, focused on reading in P6 & P7, we completed a task where the class had to identify a scale of where words would fit depending on their meaning. This week we looked at words associated with speed.

Maths

Rapid Recall

We have introduced a game called 'Rapid Recall' - a challenge against ourselves to try and become speedier with our times tables! This week we did our initial run on the 10x and 5x tables.

Scottish Flag

Another new card game was introduced called Scottish Flag. All 4 operations can be used and helps to support our number sense and use of multiple stage calculations.

Elapsed Time

We've continued to look at reading the time this week, but focused more on elapsed time. We did this altogether before working on some differentiated word problems individually.

Woods Visit 7/11/23

We finally got our first visit to the woods this term! We first of all went looking for pine cones, before trying to categorise and sort them into different groups. Then we spent some time learning about pine trees and pine cones, before ending our hour at the woods on a colour hunt. A huge thank you to our volunteer helpers for your time - it is much appreciated!

WW2

This was an important week for our topic, and something we will go on to discuss this week too as Remembrance Day fell over the weekend. We analysed the famous poem, 'In Flanders Field' and discussed the importance of the key messages written in the poem. On Friday, we joined with Primary 6 to create some poppy art. The class also have worked hard on a piece of writing where they have put themselves into the shoes of a child being evacuated. This piece of writing will be worked on throughout this term and will have several drafts - to be more reflective of the type of work they will carry out in Secondary.

It's a Long Way to Tipperary!

We went to the music room and learned the first part to this song on the glockenspiel and xylophone.

PE

Fun was had at PE this week as always! After many requests, we went out to the grass for 10 minutes at the end...but it was soaking!

We got to the PE hall and realised the netball net needing some sorting, so we had a very large game of dodgeball instead for some fun this week! One game lasted around 15 minutes!

Online Learning Lab: Renewable Energy

We have been joining up with Primary 6 recently to work together on some STEM activities set up by the Learning Lab at UHI in collaboration with Glasgow Science Centre. This week we discussed the pros and cons of renewable energy and fossil fuels - completing tasks together to help support their understanding. On Friday, an online Learning Lab was held with guest speaker Lorna Bennett an Engineer working for Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult.

Introduction to Micro:Bits

The class got to have their first shot of the Micro:Bits on Thursday! I'm really looking forward to doing more with the class using these this week. For this week we used the battery packs to explore them initially. Next week, we will begin to code the Micro:Bits using online software on our chromebooks!

Week 2

Our first full week back after the October holidays! Enjoy the pictures below that show our fun filled week.

Spelling Sound - th/wh

This week we practised our spelling words. We completed a spelling race one day and then the next we looked at the syllables and rhyming words to go along with them.

Rhyming

Some words were easier than others to come up with possible perfect rhymes, but P7 were certainly up to the challenge! We discussed what a perfect rhyme meant and how our work on syllables will support that.

Sentence Structure

P7 have been encouraged to consider their sentence structure as there have been times that their sentences were too long. They worked in pairs to read over this text and put in the correct punctuation.

Descriptive Paragraph

P7 are being encouraged to consider the descriptive bubble now when writing about a whole image. This has been a little harder, but we are continuing to develop our vocabulary to improve our work!

Maths

In maths this week we have been developing our number sense and mental agility when learning 2 new maths card games - 'Hero' and 'Click'. The children enjoyed the challenge of these games! We also completed a few countdown challenges too, along with practising skip counting in decimal values.

More time was spent perfecting our ability to read an analogue clock. Next week will be looking at the length of time between two different clocks. We will do this with both analogue and digital times.

STEM

P7 have entered the Schools Air Race Challenge 2023 run by Aero Space Kinross. They had to design and decide what features made the best paper aeroplane. We had great fun researching different designs, folding them and then flying them! They were tricky when the folds became tighter, but we kept going. It was worth it for the fun that we had throwing them in the hall later!

P6 and P7 joined together to look at renewable energy ahead of an online session led by the Newton Rooms and Glasgow Science Centre next week. We discussed the importance of electricity in modern society and the different renewable energy sources that exist. They worked in pairs to make cardboard gears and will then have opportunities next week to experiment with them and test how they work.

WW2

This week we learned about the evacuation of many women and children during WW2. We developed our note-taking skills whilst listening to radio excerpts from the time. P7 learned about the 5 Rs when note-taking: record, reduce, recite, reflect and review. This was initially very hard for the class, but we discussed various ways that we can take notes and how the most important thing is that the individual can make sense of it and review it in time.

We watched a short clip about evacuation and then talked over some images from the time. The class tried to understand the various emotions that would be involved when being evacuated. They then recognised that there were connections with other conflicts throughout the world. P7 then noted down what they had learned in their project jotters. These are their most prized jotters in class - they make such an incredible effort with them!

HWB: Netball

On Thursday, after working on our netball skills, we played a game of netball with some changes to accommodate our numbers. The children displayed great team work and were great at involving everyone!

HWB: Peer Pressure

On Monday, we explored the term 'peer pressure'. The class watched a few clips and discussed the behaviours of different individuals. Then in pairs, they had to complete a diamond 9 task to identify the values they prioritise in their friendships.

Woods Visit

This term we have 5 visits to the local woods planned to support our outdoor learning block. Unfortunately, due to some unforeseen clashes occurring today, it meant we were unable to go for our first visit. However, we will try again next week! The class will begin to acquire skills and knowledge over the next few weeks so they can be put forward to collect an award -  lots of hard work is on the horizon!

Nessie Knighthood

This individual has recently joined the class, but it truly feels like they've always been a part of our P7 Nessies! It has been a joy to have you with us and hope that we can all make many happy memories in P7 together this year!

Celebrating Achievements

A huge well done to this individual for all of their hard work at kung fu. At the weekend they had a belt exam for the purple tag to be on their blue belt. Great determination - keep it up!

Week 1

A very strange start to term 2 with our heating being a bit all over the place! Although having 3 days together was better than none at all.

We have 2 weeks of netball left after this week.

PE: Netball

The class enjoyed reminding themselves of the different types of throws they could use in a match.

We practised these on Tuesday during our PE slot.

Maths: Time

We began to look at reading analogue clocks on Monday to show what knowledge was had by the class. P7 looked at a concept cartoon to help facilitate discussion and figure out which statements were correct by giving explanations as to why.

It was brilliant to see such engaging discussions amongst Primary 7 pupils.

Enterprise: Fab-Bricks

On Monday, P7 pupils will be going around the school to share about a possible purchase that could be made by others within the school community. This week we practised our "sales pitch" and considered the appropriate language, tone and presence when trying to encourage people to like a product. They practised in pairs on Tuesday and Friday.

Spitfire Art

On Monday, the class followed a step-by-step tutorial to draw a spitfire similar to those used during WW2 by the Royal Airforce. They then spent time created their background scenery before placing their spitfires on to make it look like they were flying up above. Everyone approached the task with their own creative take on how they wanted it to look. Some could be working on them for a number of weeks, but they will definitely be worth waiting for!

Celebrating Achievements

A huge congratulations to this individual who came into school on Monday with this winners plate that they gained over the holidays in a Highland Dancing competition. They will go on with a group of other dancers to represent the North of Scotland in May 2024.
