WINTER MARKET
The SPC Board was so proud to support the 9th graders' 'Winter Market' for primary students at Johannesgatan - and what a success it was! Despite Swish being down the entire time (!) the students managed to sort out payments, run stalls with gingerbread decorating, ornament painting, crafting, games; as well as a bake sale and hot chocolate bar and a photo booth they created themselves!
It took a lot of organisation and we're so thankful for the support of all the parents who helped make this a really joyous seasonal event for primary children. In total, the students made over 10,000 kronor for 'The Nepal Project', so you and they were supporting a great cause too. It’s so wonderful to see SIS students from the middle school at Norra Latin put on an event for Primary in JG and feel that we are one big SIS family: 2 buildings, 1 school!
HALLOWEEN 2023
The SPC came together for Halloween, putting the spirit into Spirit Week. With candy for all students and teachers, competitions galore and some great parties, it may have been our biggest effort yet!
Over 270 students participated in the Primary School's Trick-or-Treat Carnival, where class parents decorate their doors for prizes. The students journeyed through the Johannesgatan building, completing a Halloween challenge at each door in exchange for a stamp on their card. Once they had a full stamp card, families were invited to come to the auditorium to pick up their candy bag, take pictures at the photo booth, and craft while enjoying spooky snacks!
The Middle School Halloween Committee (in conjunction with students), threw a party at the OPG with games, a disco, a fortune teller and a whole Halloween spread including KFC, cakes and candy!
Competition winners
Parents’ Doorways: Parents from EY, 3V & 5C
Students’ Jokes: Hamad Almohaidib, Luke Kelly & Gabriel Smolkin
Teachers’ Costumes: Mr Snell, Ms. Gernandt, The SLT, ‘Museum’ by the Art teachers, ‘Electricity’ by Ms March/Ms. Logan & The 3 Musketeers!
WORLD TEACHERS' DAY
World Teachers’ Day took place on 5th October and the SIS Parent Community showed their appreciation with an international fika!
Many parents (and some students!) baked items from their favourite countries: from brigadeiros to bougatsa, from chocolate chip cookies to cheesecake, from mochi to melktert. There were contributions from all continents - a truly international fika for our truly international school.
We were overwhelmed by the generosity of parents who donated money for the SPC Board to buy extra treats, including red velvet croissants, key lime pies and smores brownies from Mr Cake, cardamom buns from Lillebrors and other treats from around the world such as stroopwafels, maple cookies and chocolate fudge cake.
For parents, it was a small tribute to give to SIS staff and teachers, who make our children's lives better every day with their dedication, hard work and sense of fun! We hope it was a sweet day for them!
BUDDY BOAT 2023
The SPC Buddy Boat is where new families get to make friends and try Swedish fika, while sailing the archipelago and experiencing Stockholm's stunning scenery in the autumn sunshine. This year, over 60 parents signed up - and we even got a glimpse of royalty, as the King's Boat and the royal Norwegian and Danish yachts were on the water to celebrate the King of Sweden’s 50th anniversary of his coronation.
We started the event with some 'Buddy Boat Bingo', where parents had to meet 9 people who fulfilled different criteria. Congratulations to Mari Lavender, Amy Gervich and Nicoletta Batini who won prizes for completing their bingo cards first! It paved the way for a lot of chatting and making connections with parents. Of course, everyone on board was a winner - of the Nobel prize in chocolate form! - as they disembarked from this floating fika with friends.
TOUR OF NORRA LATIN
2023 marked an epoch in SIS life with the inauguration of Norra Latin. Since our middle and upper school students get the opportunity to learn every day in such beautiful surroundings, we wanted their parents to experience a taste of what their children do!
Emma Jones was kind enough to provide a guided tour of the building for 20 parents, with an insight borne of having worked with architects and experts for months. Attendees were treated to a broad history of the building and its original founding to its new purpose as a world-class building for a world-class school.
It was wonderful to learn about the journey SIS has undergone, achieving so much in a very short time. It was fascinating to hear how the original heritage of the building is being preserved, whilst ensuring it will be a functioning working space for staff, teachers and of course, our own students. Thank you Emma - and Viva Norra Latin!
ACTS OF KINDNESS IN PRIMARY SCHOOL
The SPC ran an 'Acts of Kindness' campaign for Valentine's Day in Primary - and the students wowed us with their efforts!
From baked treats for the teachers to doing chores at home, from reading to other classes to cards for the catering staff, from looking after pets to offering 'smiles' around the building, there were beautiful gestures from children of all ages! In fact, so many beautiful gestures, we couldn't pick just one winner! So, the SPC is awarding prizes to all classes - this will be 1 book/grade level donated to the library in their name, as one final Act of Kindness.
Thank you to Primary students, parents and teachers for helping make Valentine’s Day a meaningful day and showing the spirit of kindness at SIS.
CODING & CUPCAKES CHILLAX
For our final Chillax of the year, we couldn't decide whether to theme the event with coding or cupcakes. So we thought, why not have both?
With a Coder Dojo running in one room, fondant and frosting fun in another, the students had a blast - and something to take home! That's not forgetting all the drinks, snacks and pizza that they consumed whilst they could hang out with their friends.
That brings the Chillaxes of 2022-23 to an end - we'd like to say a huge thank you to all the parents and students who made it all possible. See you next year!
CURLING EVENT '23
This year, the SPC invited families to our annual curling event; it was the first time that over 8s were invited - and they had a fabulous time.
After pizza, drink and some top instruction, the competition was on! From youngest to oldest, 39 players took to the targets to play 'Chess on Ice'. The winning team was actually disqualified because they showed poor sportsmanship in crushing their kids 12-0! The biggest congratulations go to Amaya Salinas, Elena Conti and Leo Akal, who won medals, fair and square.
A great time was had by all, including our winning teams. The instructor said we were the best he had ever seen - until next year!
DO YOU WANNA BUILD A SNOWMAN?
When school declared a 'snow day' on the 21st November, there was only one question to ask the SIS Parent Community: Do you wanna build a snowman? The answer was a resounding 'YES' with pictures of snowy landscapes, red cheeked children and variations of Frosty pouring in!
We had tall ones, family ones and even a 'bench' snowman! There were also some lovely shots of the school playground, transformed into a winter wonderland; and a number of families took the chance to get the sleds out! For some students, this was their first experience building a snowman, and we feel privileged to share those memories.
What a way to mark the occasion of the winter season - thank you SIS families!
STOCKHOLM FOOD & WINE
When the Stockholm Food & Wine Fair hit town, the SIS Parent Community were right there. From Swiss cheeses to Portuguese piri piri, from artisan chocolates to gluten-free pizza and - more importantly - from Southern Comfort to Tanqueray, we tried them all! There were even stalls not related to food, but to winter, such as Christmas decorations and woolly jumpers. We didn't know we needed those things until we saw them, but now we realise we couldn't have lived without them ;)
It was wonderful meeting vendors and learning about the intricacies of parmesan cheese-making, which sandwich was voted 'Sweden's best' this year and that you can make wine from lingonberries. It was such a fun day out - eating, drinking and making merry with friends. Definitely a repeat for next year!
STAFF APPRECIATION
Monday 7th November was Swedish Teacher's Day - and also the first day back at school after autumn break. We wanted to make sure it was a sweet return and so the our parent community baked, bought or contributed to fika for all the staff across all 4 locations!
From those who baked or bought their treats, there was a wealth of yumminess from brigadeiros to stroopwafels, from carrot cakes to cupcakes, from brownies to cheesecake, accompanied by lovely messages of appreciation.
For those who donated to the SPC board, we did not let you down! Cardamom buns, red velvet croissants, key lime pies, s'mores brownies and three enormous cakes (raspberry & white chocolate, salted caramel and devil's chocolate) with a big 'Thank you, SIS staff' on each of them!
Thanks to them - and thanks to our wonderful parent community. Together, we make everything possible.
TAKE ME DOWN - TO FUNGI TOWN!
One of the great joys of Swedish autumn is mushroom foraging in the forest. It seemed a risky outing for non-Swedes, so the SPC organised an expert, Brian Johnson, from Nordic Mushroom Guiding, as our fun guy to sort through the fungi.
We learnt about the dangers of gills, the surprising spiciness of Milk Caps and where Trumpet Chanterelles like to hide. As well as pictures and stories, our guide seemed to have encyclopedic knowledge and showed us mushrooms we'd never seen before, including the beautiful 'chicken noodle mushroom', which looks like a piece of coral hiding at the bottom of old spruce trees, which adds umami to a bowl of ramen.
We were lucky to have a great guide, great weather and great company on the day and left the forest happy with a whole bunch of 'shrooms. It was a lovely way to explore where the wild things are.
CHILLAX IN THE ANNEXE: GAMING NIGHT
On Friday 16th September, the SPC hosted our first 'Chillax in the Annexe' for middle schoolers. Over 60 students signed up to hang out with friends, eat pizza and play games. There were Xboxes and Nintendos set up, as well as a variety of board games, which the students seemed to enjoy just as much! It was heartwarming to see how much fun they had - and how well they behaved!
'Chillax in the Annexe' was launched in 2021 as part of the YANA (You Are Not Alone) initiative for students. We felt it vital to have a safe space for old and new students to be together and have fun (under parental supervision, of course!)
Many many thanks to Christian, Demetra, Diana, Farrah, Henrik, Inga, Tamara, Kevin, Monica, Marianne and Rekha for volunteering - we could not have done it without you! And of course special thanks to Avanti, the VP for middle school, who led and organised our first Chillax of the school year!
ALL ABOARD THE BUDDY BOAT!
The SPC started the new year in style with a cruise around the archipelago. This was a new event for 2022, in keeping with the SPC's commitment to its YANA (You Are Not Alone) initiatives.
New and experienced parents alike enjoyed the chance to enjoy Swedish fika on the water, while the sun shone overhead. Giulietta Saconney Cerruti, was an entertaining and informative speaker about her experiences across the globe. Her Q&A enabled the audience to pose their own questions and learn about parenting 3rd culture children.
Building community is at the heart of the SPC's mission. Getting parents together at the start of the year, learning from others' experiences whilst navigating the city by water was something everybody enjoyed. We couldn't think of a better way to spend a morning than with our SIS Parent Community!
FIRST GM OF 2022-23!
It was great to be able to finally meet in person for our general meetings after two long pandemic years!
We were delighted to meet old parents and new and share our exciting plans for the year ahead, including our new structure. As well as president Marianne Lauridsen, we now have 3 Vice-Presidents to reflect the differing needs of the school ages: David Salinas for Primary School, Avanti Bammanhalli for Middle School and Tamara Tomasetto for Upper School. This was a wonderful opportunity for them to introduce themselves and exchange ideas with the wider SPC.
2022-23 is the year to rebuild our community after Covid, both from top-level events involving the whole school to grassroots events led by parents on Classlist. Whether it's International Day, where the entire school community comes together to celebrate its diversity; learning how to curl with the trustees or a museum visit to Uppsala, it's all happening here with the SPC!
DRIVE FOR UKRAINE
With the support of the SPC board and led by the Student Council, the SIS community came together for Ukraine, collecting all kinds of items needed by refugees and those under siege, from blankets to bottles to baby strollers. In total, we delivered 60 moving boxes and three fully loaded cars of donation on Saturday. Some of the donations were transported to villages outside of Kyiv in the evening.
Solögat Chamania is an organisation recommended by the Ukraine government and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, working locally with Svenska Kyrka. Led by a Swedish-Ukranian couple, they deliver donations to be delivered directly to the western part/small villages in Ukraine, as well as refugees here in Sweden.
A huge thank you to those who donated, sorted and drove to get these items to those in need, including MYP students showing global citizenship - and earning SA hours in the process!
SPC TURNS 70!
On 25th March, over 150 parents got together to celebrate 70 years of community building with the SPC!
The fun started at 8pm in Skyddsrummet, overlooking the water - and didn't end until 2am. There was a live band and DJ, great friends and canapés - everything we needed to celebrate after two hard pandemic-ridden years. The evening also served as a fund raiser to ensure all our students also had spring parties: their parents finally had 'Permission to Dance' and now, so could their children!
A huge thank you to Carlsberg and Pernod Ricard for ensuring the drinks flowed all night. As well as great beer and mixers, bartenders poured 'house-themed' cocktails that helped us stay on the dance floor:
A Breath of Fresh AIR: Absolut Citron, Lychee, Lemon, Ginger & Elderflower
WATER: The Surf Wave Malibu, Cucumber Bitters & Elderflower Soda
EARTH: Cocoa Martini Absolut Vodka, Kahlua, Scrappy’s Chocolate Bitters & Espresso
FIRE: Fiery Mule Absolut Lime, Lime & Ginger Beer
Thank you to everyone who came and made the evening so special - we love the SIS Parent Community!

CURLING EVENING
The 19th February saw our own SPC Winter Olympic Curling Competition! 23 brave souls brought their sense of adventure, competing in 8 teams for fabulous prizes. There was food, there was fun, there were falls - everything we needed for a great night out.
Winners: Filip Standaert, Yuri Reijmer & Kristian Skovmand
Runners Up: Zsolt Kiss, Monica & Adriano Merigli
Most Improved: Dina Gabriel
Most Resilient: Charl Bassil
Well done to all the medal-winners - let's do it all again next year!
'LOVE YOUR TEACHER' - VALENTINE'S INITIATIVE
The SPC celebrated love of community this Valentine's Day! All teachers were asked for 3 'wishes' for their classroom outside of the common supply list. The wishes were posted up and parents either purchased the items or contributed money so that the SPC could do so.
Every teacher received at least one gift from their list, with some classes pooling their efforts for big items such as a 2nd hand stationery bike and ear defenders for every child in the class! We even had some gifts outside of the list, which were gratefully received such as musical instruments. Check the teacher rocking out to her guitar!
All the gifts were wrapped and delivered to the teachers on Valentine's Day, along with chocolates for every staff lounge. All the recipients were hugely grateful and touched by the effort made, with this message being a typical response:
Too Kind! Much appreciated and will be very utilized!!!! This has been such a lovely initiative; thank you thank you!
Over Valentine's week, the SPC has put up 'SIS Appreciation Trees', where students and staff can write all the things they love about the school. From the initial response, we can say there are a lot of things! A huge thank you to the amazing SIS parents for making the children's classrooms that bit more special; and sharing the love this Valentine's Day.
LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATION
On 1st February, the SPC celebrated the year of the Tiger! We decorated the school and provided every student with a fortune cookie. During the evening, we were joined online by 60 students, parents and staff members to watch a presentation (see left) by SIS Chinese students on the Chinese New Year festival. We followed it up with an online bingo game hosted by SIS parent Cheryl Abramson.
The lucky winners were: Yao Ge, The Oslers, Oliver Grace, Lucas Abramson, Sandra Loureiro & Ellen Larsson, who have all won vouchers to spend at Urban Deli.
Congratulations and happy new year!
Lucia is a highlight of the Swedish calendar, filling dark days with candles and song. In the old 'Julian' calendar, the winter solstice was celebrated on December 13th, which was later merged with the Christian story of St Lucia.
The SPC wanted to introduce our new international families to this beautiful festival, and worked with Kimberley Akester and SIS Junior choir to create a performance to remember, live-streamed for parents.
The event started with the iconic Luciatåg (procession) singing 'Sankta Lucia' led by Mirela Gynne. There was then a perfect blend of English songs such as 'Rocking Around the Christmas Tree', 'Winter Wonderland' and 'Walking in the Air' with Swedish classics 'Julen är Här' and 'Tänd ett Ljus'. The children were so impressive with their narration, voices and some cool dance moves!
The concert ended with both audience and the choir joining together in a rousing redition of 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas'. We then celebrated with gingerbread, lussekatter (Saffron buns that are a must on this day) and hot glögg (mulled wine) and hot chocolate from Thelins.
It was a perfect way to spend a Monday afternoon - celebrating the Swedish festival of light.

Parent Initiatives
We know our parent community is talented and we couldn't have been more delighted to find out we had a budding sommelier in our midst! This gave the Parent Reps of grades 6 & 8 the chance to organise an evening of fine wine and nibbles at the OPG.
Other parent initiatives included a day out at the iconic Opera House in Stockholm. Parents got to chat over a light lunch and then be moved by fantastically talented singers, giving us a taste of Swedish carols. The last song 'I'll be Home for Christmas' definitely brought a few tears for some of us who have been waiting a long time to see our loved ones.
There was also a very special julbord - Christmas lunch - at Norra Latin, with the most amazing seasonal displays and a spread of food that had us drooling, especially the desserts!
The SPC Book Fair had three different components: an e-catalog of new books to order, the PYP jultomte initiative and the book swap. We are glad to say that every part was a success, with over 400 new books sold, 123 of which were assigned for jultomten (the Swedish Santa) to bring to a primary school child. These books are being wrapped and labelled by MYP students, helping them to earn their SA hours.
The Book Swap saw around 650 books being exchanged between students, with fika awarded to the following:
PYP Class to bring in the most books: 5C
MYP Class to bring in the most books: 6C
DP student who brought in the most books:
Christopher Sarkis, 11P
An honourable mention goes to Filippa Roth from 4V who brought in the most books of all!
BOOK FAIR
Halloween
The SPC Halloween event was bigger and better than ever! Compared to our usual 100 tickets for just primary students, we were able to entertain almost 300 students across all the SIS locations and still meet all fire codes and school regulations. We were thrilled to help build community across all our locations.
For Grades EY3-G2, we had a Halloween movie night on 28th October, whilst G3-5 enjoyed our famous carnival, playing games to win their candy. In the Annexe, we had a Halloween-themed Chillax with a choice of 2 movies and spooky songs, whilst students at the OPG enjoyed a 'Halloween Hangout' with themed mocktails and snacks. There were candy bags for all and costume contests a-plenty, including a staff one where the children got to choose the winners!
All-in-all, it was a wonderful celebration for our children. Thank you to all those parent volunteers who made it all possible with their help, kindness and food donations!

The weekend of the 18th-19th September marked SIS' 'Get Moving' weekend, with parents walking to support the school's Spirit Fund. Parents from each house met, walked and, of course, fika'd together in teams, making the most of the last few days before winter really sets in.
The SPC organised a guided tour of Djurgården with the help of our walking group, that makes the round every Friday morning. The amazing Ellen Larsson created maps of this beautiful island, illustrating places of interest, some of which we'd never seen before - thank you Ellen!
We ended our walk with a hard-earned bulle at Flickorna Helins, where we'd negotiated a discount for our community. Thanks for coming!

Get Moving For SIS - House Fika
Chillax in the Annexe
On 3rd September, the SPC launched 'Chillax in the Annexe', an after-school hangout for Grades 6-9, as part of our wider YANA initiative.
The event was fully booked and the students had a great time: chatting, playing table football and hide-and-seek and eating copious amounts of pizza. There was even some dancing from the 8th graders!
The students gave us so much positive feedback and clearly loved being at the school with no teachers there! Our favorite quote:
'I'm glad not everybody from our class came because we got to hang out with kids from other classes, which we wouldn't usually have done'.
That's what the You Are Not Alone project is all about - and we're so glad it was a success.
Watch out for the next event on the 1st October!
