This section should give you a good overview of what you need when you first get to Stockholm. For a more detailed overview of individual processed, there is a really useful website on settling in in Sweden: www.justlanded.com.
Sometimes it's nice to reach out to people who speak the same language or know where 'home' is. Here is a list of international clubs and societies in Stockholm.
Residence Permit
Citizens from other Nordic countries do not need residence permits, although they must report to the local tax authority for registration.
EU nationals must obtain a residence permit within three months of entering Sweden.
Permits are issued by the Immigration Office (Migrationsverket). For information on how to obtain a permit and information for non-EU nationals see www.migrationsverket.se.
Registration and Personal Number
Once you have a residence permit, you are eligible to apply for a personal number (personnummer), which each family member should have. If you work with an embassy, please check with your embassy for advice. Having a personal number eases the simple things in life such as opening a bank account, accessing health care, or collecting mail at the post office.
To apply for a personal number, you can report in person to your local tax office (Skatteverket). For locations, check their website at www.skatteverket.se click on 'Other languages' - 'Contact us' - 'Visit us' - then type in Stockholm.
Take your passport, residence permit, birth certificates for children under 18, and documents concerning your civil status (actual marriage certificate, not a copy). Note that all members of the family must go in person. It can take up to six weeks to receive your personal number.
Identity Card or ID
You will often be asked for identification, for example, when paying with a credit card without a PIN code (your residence permit card is not enough). The Swedish ID will bear your photo and personal number. Having this form of ID will make your everyday life a little easier because most things are linked to your personal number and therefore helps to identify you in the Swedish system.
ID cards are issued by the Tax agency or banks such as SEB or Handelsbanken.
You can find a form at www.skatteverket.se, ‘Other languages’ - ‘Apply for an ID card’
What you need to bring with you to apply:
be registered as living in Sweden
be aged 13 or over
have paid the application fee of SEK 400 and be able to present a receipt or a bank statement proving that you have paid
be able to demonstrate who you are (prove your identity). Bring with you an approved identification document (e.g. passport) or valid residence permit
have the permission of your legal guardian(s) if you are under the age of 18.
In the interim, carry your passport with you, or use a driver's license with a photograph as identification.
Child Benefit
Once you have a personal number, you qualify for medical care and other welfare benefits. You need to send in the forms given to you by Skatteverket and Försäkringskassan.
If you are not claiming child benefit in any other country, you should receive child allowance of SEK 1,250/month per child (barnbidrag) for any child under the age of 16. You may also qualify for parental allowance if you have a baby or pre-school child. If you have two or more children, you will also receive a large family supplement.
For more information call Försäkringskassan on 0771 524 524 or go to www.fk.se and click ‘Menu’ then ‘In English’.
CSN
When you are studying full-time at upper secondary school and have reached the age of 16, you can get a recent student grant from CSN. You will receive SEK 1,250 per month, and this is usually paid out over ten months – from September to June. At most, you can receive the student grant until the spring semester of the year you turn 20.
Taxation in Sweden
For the best information contact Skatteverket, Swedish Tax Authority (www.skatteverket.se) or your employer.
Banking in Sweden
The four main banks in Sweden are Handelsbanken, Swedbank, Nordea and SEB. Bank offices are generally open Monday–Friday, 10am–4 pm. The easiest way to open an account is to visit a bank branch in person. You usually need proof of address and your passport or Swedish ID card, but contact your bank or check its website for more details. Keep in mind that most banks require you to have a Swedish personal identification number when opening an account.
Paying Bills
You have two ways of paying your bills/invoices:
Pay online, the easiest way to bank in Sweden, using the online banking facility provided by the bank of your choice. Not all banks have English websites; use Google translate to follow the instructions for online payments. You will need a Mobilt BankID or a bank issued digipass that allows you to enter special security codes to access the bank.
You can also take the invoice/bill to your local bank and pay over the counter, but expect to pay a surcharge of at least 45kr per bill.
Wills
Different countries have different rules for how a will is valid when a person resides abroad. In some cases, a will needs to be signed by two Swedish citizens. Please look into what's relevant for you.
