Before you or your child ever gets sick, it is a good idea to stop by your nearest doctors’ office and register your family, which usually just involves filling out a brief form and selecting a doctor. Most läkare (doctors) work through local Vårdcentral, a doctor’s office, directly translated to ‘Care-central’. An out-of-hours medical center is called Närakut. Call 112 if you need an ambulance in an emergency.
You can find details of your nearest practice by phoning the 24-Hour Health Care Information/Helpline at 1177 or www.1177.se (scroll down to ‘other languages’, then press ‘seek healthcare’).
Don’t be surprised if you find an appointment for a Pap smear or Mammography in the mail, almost upon arrival!
Private Health Care
Läkarhuset (Hötorget/city), Läkarhuset (Odenplan in Vasastan), Sofia Hemmet and Barnsjukhuset Martina (on Valhallavägen) are but four of the many private clinics/hospitals in Stockholm that have good reputations.

You should register your whole family at your local Vårdcentral when you first come to Sweden. However, there are specific health care services for children, as listed below.
Barnavårdcentral BVC (Children's Health Center)
Barnavårdcentral is a free clinic for children up to 5 years of age, staffed with nurses, midwives and doctors, all specializing in children's health. You will be assigned a nurse at the BVC who will carry out vaccinations, track your child’s weight and height measurements and developmental progress, perform hearing and sight tests, and any other non-urgent health matters. Once your child is over five years old and is in school, preventative health checks and immunizations are provided through a nurse at the school.
Healthcare at SIS
The School Health Service is a continuation of the work of Swedish children's clinics (BVC) or in other words your child's occupational health service. School Health Service works preventatively for better health and well-being amongst students. Minor health care services are also conducted such as: health profiles, follow up of growth and weight development including BMI, eyesight, hearing, back checks and vaccinations.
At SIS Health check-ups are offered in Grade 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10. For more information, contact the school nurse.
Ungdomsmottagning (Youth Clinic)
These youth medical centres are staffed with midwives, social workers, doctors and sometimes psychologists. These are available for youths up until the age of 24.

General Specialist Care
Specialist care works both as part of the state system, or privately. For the public healthcare route, you will need a remiss (referral) from your GP surgery, who will assign you to the specialist in question. If you decide to go private, you can often book directly, without a referral at www.privatvård.info. Obviously, it is more expensive to go down the private route, but can be quicker and you may be able to choose your doctor.
Barnmorskemottagningen (Midwife Clinic)
All women in the fertile stages of life can also get specialist care at the Barnmorskemottagningen or mödravårdscentralen. This is where specialist pregnancy care can be given, as well as information and advice about contraceptives, smear tests, abortion advice, and other gynaecological concerns.
