Mini-MUN
What is MiniMUN?
Mini-MUN will take place at the same day as SISMUN for grades 6 and 7, using topics that connect to topics they are studying in school. Mini will also serve as an introduction for younger students to MUN. Use this as an opportunity to try debating, and think about how different countries can think in different ways!
This year's topics
Grade 6: Our Planet
The earth is getting warmer, and the "frozen beauty" of the world may melt away.
Climate change affects the entire world, as well as the way we live. Many animals are on the verge of extinction because of disappearing habitats, and the plants they depend on are getting affected by extreme weather events which are getting more common.
In the coldest parts of our world, both of these are happening. The rising temperatures are melting away glaciers and changing the habitats of animals. Not only will this affect the animals, but also our cities by seas and oceans. Melting glaciers mean that sea levels will rise, submerging our cities.
Grade 6 will be looking at Antartica and other places which will be impacted by climate change.
How can the UN bring countries together in an effort to minimise the consequences of climate change?
Grade 7: Diets and Digestion
What do you think about when someone says "diseases"?
Diseases are not only the icky ones you can catch from other like the cold or COVID, but also ones which can be caused by what you eat, or what you inherited from your parents. These are Noncommunicable Diseases.
This year, Grade 7 will be taking a look at diseases caused by malnutrition, which is when a proper diet isn't followed. In some countries, people don't have enough to eat or not enough of certain foods due to famine, causing problems with children's growth. In other countries, diets are not balanced, resulting in people being overweight or not getting enough of certain food types.
How can the UN work together to reduce diseases caused by malnutrition?
Tips for Mini Delegates
Don't be nervous to present an opinion which is relevant in the discussion, you are here to discuss ideas and solutions!
Don't be scared of getting parlimentary procedure wrong, the chairs are here to help you learn!
If you have an idea for a solution, use unmoderated caucus to talk to your fellow delegates and get their opinion! Teamwork is what helps make a strong resolution!
Even if it feels uncomfortable to be speaking in front of everyone at first, make sure to speak clearly.
Make sure to know about the topic overall so that you can understand why your fellow delegates may have a different opinion!
If you want to discuss somehting with a delegate during a debate, you can pass notes. Use this wisely, because chairs will check the notes being passed
Make sure to enjoy yourself, and participate while still feeling comfortable. It's important to use this experience to learn more about MUN and the topic, but it is more important to make sure you don't push yourself too hard in debate. Everyone has different levels of experience, and that's okay!
