The Namuli Mountains are located in northern Mozambique. They are known as the “islands of the sky” because their forests are found at high altitudes and are separated from other mountains, making the fauna and flora of the area very special.
They are in Zambézia Province, northern Mozambique. Mount Namuli is the highest peak, about 2,419 meters.
These mountains remain ‘unexplored’ because they are very difficult to reach. There are no good roads, the forests are dense, and the mountains are precipitous. Only a few scientists have visited them, so many parts remain unknown.
· WHY DO HUMANS EXPLORE IT?
The Namuli Mountains are explored out of curiosity. People feel a desire to investigate unknown places. Scientists go there to study evolution, climate, and biodiversity.
It is also exciting because we can expand our knowledge about life in places that are untouched. Some explorers want to move forward by discovering new plants that can help people.
Exploring these mountains teaches us something about human nature: we care about learning and discovering.
JOURNEY, CHALLENGES & RISKS
How to get there:
-Fly to mozambique
-Travel long hours on dirt roads
-Final part of the trip is only by foot with local guides
-Expeditions can last several days
The environment:
-Steep mountains and rocky slopes
-Thick jungle and cloud forest
-Constant fog, rain, slippery paths
-Cold and humid at high altitudes
Main challenges:
-Getting lost because there are few maps
-Dangerous animals and insects
-Illnesses with limited medical help
-Extreme weather changes
-Fires and deforestation caused by humans
What explorers will be doing
-Scientists will be discovering new species hiding in small crevices.
-Conservationists will be engaging with local communities to protect the forests.
-Researchers will be mapping areas that no one has explored yet.
-Ecologists will be monitoring how climate change affects the mountains.
What humanity will have discovered
-Humanity will have discovered many new plants and animals.
-Scientists will have understood how these isolated ecosystems evolve.
-Conservation programs will have protected the cloud forests.
-The Namuli Mountains will have become an important place for biodiversity, showing that humans care about nature.
A short personal reflection:
In my opinion, exploring places like the Namuli Mountains is important because it helps us understand how fragile nature is. If humans care and act responsibly, we can protect these ecosystems for the future.
Why this place interested me?
I chose the Namuli Mountains because I find remote places exciting. I like the idea that there are still areas on Earth where scientists can pursue questions and discover new species.
A conservation message:
Humans will have learned that protecting places like Namuli is necessary to avoid losing biodiversity.
