In Unit 3, students research water in their city. They learn why a local body of water is an important part of its ecosystem and their city’s economy, history, or culture. They research the city’s water system and analyze a strategy to protect water security. Through their research, students deepen their understanding of water security and consider what it means for water security to be equitable.
In the digital project, students communicate their research in a news story that discusses the current state of water security in their city and their ideas for its future.
Enduring Understandings:
Water is an important part of a city’s economy, history, and culture.
A city is water-secure if all people can access enough safe water to thrive and the local ecosystem is healthy.
Communities can take action to make their cities more water-secure.
To learn first-hand about this topic, on 17th January we visited Ematsa's facilities in La Muntanyeta de Sant Pere i Sant Pau. There, Mr. Jordi Vallvé explained in detail the water collection, treatment, distribution and purification process and we were able to see the control room and the tanks. We left there convinced that the water from our taps is safe for consumption and much more sustainable than if we buy it packaged, in addition, he has given us very good advice to be better users of the water system. Now it's time to explain it to our international peers!
We work in class this news from Cordoba, a city in the South of Spain: "An island of towels and sediment three meters high appears in the middle of the Guadalquivir river". Although you don't understand the video, please watch it because the images are really impressive, imagine the problems that it causes on the water system!
Example of the online research to learn about water source, treatment, and delivery.
What are some strategies you use when you read, listen, or watch a source for information? To encourage students to think critically about the actions they research, they analyzed a news story about a water security issue in our city. We learn about its impacts and an action to address it.
To create the Water in Our City digital project, students produced a news story to communicate what they learned about water and water security in our city. They shared the importance of a local body of water, explained our city’s water system, and described a local water security issue and action to address it. Based on their research, they named other actions people in our city can take to protect water security for everyone now and for the future.
These are some of our digital projects:
